Plant once and have asparagus for years! Asparagus prefers rich, well-drained soil and full sun; weeds may crowd out young plants, so asparagus beds are best kept well weeded and/or thickly mulched. Plants may be harvested starting at 3-4 years after planting. If the spears are left to grow, asparagus produces beautiful feathery foliage on stems up to 6' tall and bright red berries in late summer, making plants just as valuable in the landscape as the vegetable garden. Hardy in zones 3-10.
