The Octopus agave, known as Agave vilmoriniana, is an extraordinary and visually captivating succulent known for its distinctive long, twisting leaves like octopus arms that give it its common name. This unique agave species is appreciated for its striking form and ease of care, making it a popular choice for xeriscaping and ornamental gardens, especially in arid or desert-like environments. The species belongs to the Asparagaceae family and offers a unique architectural shape, often likened to an octopus due to its curling, flexible leaves.

Native to Mexico, the Octopus Agave is sometimes referred to as Vilmorin's Agave, named after the French botanist Maurice de Vilmorin, who first classified the species. It is also occasionally called Squid Agave, which also references the tentacle-like appearance of its leaves.

The Octopus agave can reach a mature size of around 4 feet in height and 8 feet in width, making it a mid-sized agave species.

The plant forms a dense rosette, with leaves arching outward to create an impressive and widespread structure.

The spineless leaves are long and narrow, extending outward and curling in various directions, creating a dramatic, almost whimsical silhouette.

These leaves have a bright green to bluish-green hue, depending on the level of sunlight exposure.

Unlike other agaves, the Octopus Agave has smooth leaf margins without sharp terminal spines or serrated leaf edges, making it a more user-friendly option for gardens and landscapes where sharp spines might be a concern.

When it comes to flowering, this monocarpic plant flowers once in a lifetime. When the Octopus Agave reaches maturity, typically after 10 to 15 years, it produces an imposing flower stalk that can shoot up to 18 feet tall. The stalk emerges from the center of the plant, bearing clusters of small, tubular, yellowish-green flowers. These Octopus agave blooms attract a variety of pollinators, especially hummingbirds, bees, and butterflies, making them an attractive addition to wildlife-friendly gardens. After flowering, the plant will produce bulbils (small plantlets) along the stalk, which can be used for propagation, ensuring the species' continuation even after the main plant dies.

When and How to Water Octopus Agave

When it comes to watering, the Octopus agave requires minimal watering as they are drought-tolerant plants. Water deeply but infrequently, allowing the soil to dry out between waterings to prevent root rot.

From the spring to early fall, during the growing season, it’s best to water the plant moderately. Allow the soil to dry out completely between waterings, as overwatering can lead to root rot. A good rule of thumb is to water every two to three weeks during this active growth period, depending on your climate and the specific conditions of your garden or indoor space.

In the winter months, the Octopus Agave enters a dormant phase, and its watering needs decrease significantly. During this time, it's essential to reduce watering to once a month or even less, ensuring that the soil remains dry. This dormant period is crucial for the plant's health, as it helps to prevent excess moisture that can cause fungal issues. Always ensure that the pot or garden bed has excellent drainage to facilitate proper water management.

Light Requirements – Where to Place Your Octopus Agave

When grown indoors, this plant thrives best in bright, indirect light. Ideally, placing it near a south or west-facing window will provide the necessary light without exposing it to harsh, direct sunlight, which can scorch its leaves. If natural light is limited, using a growing light can help supplement its needs, ensuring the plant receives adequate brightness to support its growth.

For outdoor cultivation, the Octopus Agave prefers full sun to partial shade. It flourishes in locations that receive at least six hours of direct sunlight each day. However, in extremely hot climates, some afternoon shade can be beneficial to prevent leaf burning. Choosing a sunny spot will help the plant establish itself and promote healthy growth. It's important to monitor the plant's response to sunlight; if the leaves begin to curl or show signs of stress, adjusting its placement may be necessary. By ensuring it receives the right amount of light, you can help this unique succulent thrive and showcase its beautiful, tentacle-like leaves.

Optimal Soil & Fertilizer Needs

The Octopus Agave thrives best in well-draining soil that mimics its natural arid habitat. An optimal soil mix for this succulent should be coarse and gritty, allowing excess water to drain quickly. A combination of potting soil, coarse sand, and perlite or pumice works well to create a light and airy medium.

This type of soil not only prevents root rot but also provides the necessary aeration for the roots to breathe, which is crucial for the health of the plant.

Planet Desert specializes in succulents and has specialized succulent potting soil  that includes an organic substrate with mycorrhizae to help with the growth of a healthy root system to help your succulents thrive.

When it comes to fertilization, the Octopus Agave does not require heavy feeding. During the growing season, which is typically in spring, you can apply a diluted, balanced fertilizer specifically formulated for succulents.

A half-strength liquid fertilizer applied once a year is usually sufficient to provide the nutrients needed for healthy growth. It's essential to avoid over-fertilizing, as this can lead to salt buildup in the soil, which can harm the plant.

In the winter months, when the Octopus Agave enters its dormant phase, it’s best to refrain from fertilizing altogether. During this time, the plant conserves energy and does not require additional nutrients. By allowing the plant to rest, you can help it prepare for the next growing season.

Hardiness Zones & More

When grown indoors, the Octopus agave plant thrives in temperatures ranging from 65°F to 80°F. It can tolerate slightly cooler temperatures, down to about 50°F, but prolonged exposure to temperatures below this can stress the plant. To maintain optimal growth, it’s essential to keep the indoor environment warm and avoid placing the plant near drafts or in areas where temperatures fluctuate significantly, such as near air conditioning vents or open windows in colder months.

When it comes to humidity, the Octopus Agave prefers lower humidity levels, typical of arid regions. Indoor humidity levels between 30% and 50% are ideal for this succulent. High humidity can lead to issues such as root rot or fungal diseases, so it’s crucial to ensure good air circulation around the plant. If you notice excessive humidity in your indoor space, using a dehumidifier or placing the plant in a well-ventilated area can help maintain a suitable environment.

For outdoor cultivation, the Octopus Agave is hardy in USDA hardiness zones 9 to 11. This means it can survive in regions where winter temperatures do not drop below 20°F. In these zones, the plant can thrive in full sun and well-draining soil, making it an excellent choice for xeriscaping or drought-tolerant gardens. However, in areas where temperatures can dip below the hardiness threshold, it’s advisable to bring the plant indoors during colder months or provide protective measures, such as frost cloths, to shield it from extreme cold.

Wildlife - Octopus Agave attracts the following Friendly-Pollinators

The nectar-rich flowers of Agave vilmoriniana are a magnet for pollinators. Hummingbirds are particularly drawn to the tall flower stalk, feeding on the abundant nectar. Bees and butterflies also frequent the flowers, making this agave not only an ornamental plant but also a valuable species for supporting local pollinator populations. Its late-stage flowering serves as a vital resource for pollinators in desert environments where nectar sources can be scarce.

Toxicity: While Agave vilmoriniana is not considered highly toxic, like many other agaves, its sap can cause skin irritation in sensitive individuals. This irritation is due to the presence of saponins, natural compounds found in many agaves. Gardeners handling the plant should wear gloves to avoid contact with the sap. Ingestion of the plant is not recommended, as it can cause mild digestive discomfort. For pets, particularly cats and dogs, ingestion of agave may result in vomiting or gastrointestinal upset, though it is not typically life-threatening.

How to Propagate Octopus Agave

The Octopus Agave is typically propagated through offsets or pups that grow around the base of the plant. These offsets can be carefully removed when they are a few inches tall and have developed their own roots. To propagate, gently dig around the offset to avoid damaging it, then cut it away from the main plant using a clean, sharp knife. Allow the offset to dry for a day or two to form a callus over the cut area, which helps prevent rot. After this, plant the offset in a well-draining succulent mix and water sparingly until it establishes roots. This method is effective and allows you to create new plants that retain the unique characteristics of the parent plant.

Key Takeaways

I love this lotion so much. It makes my skin hydrated and soft. Before, my skin would be dry and crack away from each other. My friends and some online dermatologists recommended this and it has been extremely helpful. If you use a scented lotion. Wear this lotion. Then the scented lotion and then the body oil. Seems like a lot of steps but this will help your skin in the future and will result in less dermatologist visits. It’s very soft and the first ingredient is water meaning it’s a water based moisturiser so the consistency is very good!

Always a Favorite of Mine
Size: 16.9 Fl Oz (Pack of 1)
This lotion is fantastic for dry skin. It moisturizes without feeling greasy, and it absorbs well so you’re not walking around feeling like you just dipped your arms in oil. I really like that it’s unscented, which makes it great if you’re sensitive to fragrances or just don’t want your lotion competing with your perfume. It leaves skin feeling soft and hydrated for hours. I’ve tried a lot of lotions over the years, but this one does a really good job when your skin is seriously dry and needs real moisture. Overall, a great everyday lotion that actually works. My skin definitely approves.

Problem finally solved! This stuff works.
Size: 16 Ounce (Pack of 1)
I'm 60 and have very dry skin despite eating healthful food and drinking plenty of water. I've tried every moisturizer available and I've finally found one that leaves my skin hydrated. It's the perfect thickness -- not too thick like a paste and not a thin lotion -- so it's emollient and soaks in without tugging on my skin during application. This will be my after shower body lotion from now on. I'm wearing shorts and sleeveless tops again! 🥰

I'm impressed. It's very good stuff
Size: 16.9 Fl Oz (Pack of 1)
I'm finding that menopause skin is very, very dry skin. Combine that with a harsh winter and my skin was in much worst shape than normal. I usually had noticeably dry skin on my legs & arms but winter made it itchy & more flakey. I started using the Eucerin calming formula but that did nothing for the dryness but did moderately help lessen the itching. I got online to see what I could do for the flaking skin, add moisture and curb the itching without having to go to a dermatologist because I didn't think I had a major issue. My reading recommended alpha hydroxy acid (AHA) formula moisturizers and from reading amlactin was very popular and received high marks but I wanted to look at & try a couple of things before I committed to just one as it's likely this will become part of my regular skin care and I'd need an affordable option. I discovered the Eucerin AHA formula on Amazon, liked the reviews & decided why not try it. The price point was very good compared to amlactin. I received the Eucerin 12/14/2017 and have used it religiously twice a day. The flakiness subsided in a week and the itch only occurs on my back where I can't reach to apply it. This stuff has been wonderful to apply to my skin. My skin is no longer flaky or ashy & the rough patches are gone from my knees & elbows. This stuff is very heavy but it doesn't feel greasy to me because my skin soaks uses it in pretty quickly. I am not sure if I could use this in a hot, humid summer but for the current -20+ wind chills I'm living through, that heaviness is working in my favor. If you don't want to apply a heavy thick lotion to your skin or if that type of formula could cause a breakout, this isn't the moisturizer for you. It doesn't really have a smell to me. Once I apply it I only smell the scent of my bee & flower sandalwood soap. This lotion is not scented so that's a plus for me. Also unlike amlactin it does not contain parabens. I did order the amlactin and will try it after this is gone but it's likely I will continue with the Eucerin AHA formula. It has worked very well for me. I've not done price shopping for this locally so I can't add anything in terms of costs on Amazon versus brick&mortar. But if you can handle its heaviness I'd definitely recommend it.

BEST REPAIR HAND AND BODY CREAM!
Size: 16 Ounce (Pack of 1)
This is the best "repair" body/hand cream I've found, and I've tried quite a few. I have dogs and cats and I garden -- so I ALWAYS have scratches and tiny puncture woulds either from cats, dogs, rose bushes or cacti; and this Eucerin body cream helps to sooth and heal them quickly. I also notice that it helps relieve dryness very well, and once it soaks in, you aren't left feeling 'greasy'. It has no perfumes, and so is unscented.
