Cactus, Luther Burbank Spineless Cutting

Oputina hybrid

Between 1907 and 1925, Luther Burbank introduced more that 60 varieties of spineless cacti.

These were developed mostly from hybrids of varieties of the Indian fig (Opuntia ficus-indica) and the Mexican prickly pear (Opuntia tuna), and were offered in two main types: the fruiting varieties, grown for their variously colored and flavored prickly pears, and the forage varieties, grown for their edible pads (properly called thalli or nopalitos), which could be fed raw to livestock or cooked for human consumption.

This cactus can grow to over 10' tall, however, in most northern areas it is more likely to grow to 5-6' tall. Staking may be necessary. Hardy to USDA Zone 8 and is generally frost hardy down to 20 degrees once established, however, young plants may be more frost sensitive.

Throughout Mexico and Central America, the young pads are peeled and fried or pickled. For more information on recipes and historical background of eating cacti please visit the Luther Burbank web page for this unique variety:

http://www.lutherburbank.org/about-us/specialty-gardens/spineless-cactus

We will send you a pad from a mother cactus that will need to be rooted, which is a fairly simple procedure of placing it in a gallon pot of potting soil and not watering until you observe new growth.  At this point is when new roots are growing. Watering before this point will make it rot. You will receive more detailed growing instructions with your order.

Please note the "spineless" variety lacks the long spines characteristic of this species but does have short irritating hairs and should be handled with care.

1 Un-rooted Cactus Pad: $12.00

Large and durable!
Size: 1 Count (Pack of 1)
It's large but my pitties love it. I bought this to replace a small one I found at a local store about a year ago and this one is better! Large and durable and a favorite with my boys!

We love this toy!!
Size: 1 Count (Pack of 1), Size: 1 Count (Pack of 1)
I can’t say enough good things about the Pet Qwerks Pig Ear! As I’m typing this review, one of my dogs is currently chewing it and the other is watching hoping to have a turn next! It is very durable and holds up well to almost constant chewing from labs. Everywhere we go in the house, the chew is always carried along! If visits the house, the dogs come running showing off their pig ear proudly! We absolutely recommend this toy for heavy chewers and busy pups!

Love these treat rings!
My giant dogs go through almost any chew toy in seconds. We decided to try the Busy Buddy bones with the treat rings that can be replaced after the dogs decimate the treats. We love the rings and have them set up for auto delivery. I find that it gives my pups a solid hour of chewing time and mental stimulation as they try to get the ring off of the Busy Buddy toy. One of my dogs has a sensitive stomach - and we have no issues at all with peanut flavored rings. Highly recommend.
