Philodendron luxurians Croat, D.P. Hannon and R. Kaufmann – rare velvet-leaf aroid with silver veining

Philodendron luxurians is a compact velvet Philodendron from the lower montane rainforests of Chocó (Colombia) and Esmeraldas (Ecuador), described in 2010 in Aroideana. This terrestrial to semi-scandent species is treasured by collectors for its thick, soft-surfaced foliage in deep emerald, marked by prominent silver-white primary veins. In nature it often grows on shaded, mossy slopes with consistent moisture, transitioning from a creeping juvenile stage to semi-climbing maturity when given vertical support.

What makes Philodendron luxurians unique

  • Plush leaf texture: Thick, velvety lamina with shimmering silver venation and subtle bullation from raised secondary veins.
  • Manageable habit: Typically 60 – 90 cm tall indoors; mature leaves can reach 30 cm wide without dominating small spaces.
  • Growth shift: Creeping juvenile form produces broader, more architectural leaves when semi-climbing on fine-fibre supports.

From Chocó’s cloud-forest edge to your indoor collection

  • Origin: Chocó (Colombia) and Esmeraldas (Ecuador)
  • Elevation: 400 – 1000 m in lower montane rainforest
  • Habitat: Shaded slopes and mossy understories with year-round humidity, often near tree ferns and understorey palms.
  • Inflorescence: Pale green to white spathe with a green spadix; rarely produced indoors, of botanical interest only.
  • Toxicity: Contains insoluble calcium oxalate; harmful if ingested.

Care guide – keeping Philodendron luxurians thriving

  • Light: Bright, filtered light for full leaf expansion and strong colour; avoid harsh direct sun.
  • Water: Keep substrate evenly moist; allow the top 2 – 3 cm to dry between waterings.
  • Humidity: ≥70% maintains leaf turgor and prevents edge crisping; stable humidity is key for velvet quality.
  • Temperature: Optimal 20 – 28 °C; avoid rapid fluctuations and cold drafts.
  • Substrate: Airy aroid mix (~35% fine orchid bark, 25% sphagnum moss, 20% perlite, 10% compost, 10% horticultural charcoal) for moisture retention and drainage.
  • Feeding: Balanced liquid fertiliser at 25 – 50% label rate every 4 – 6 weeks in active growth; adjust to growth pace, not calendar months.
  • Support: Fine-textured moss pole or tree fern fibre slab encourages vertical growth, shorter internodes, and larger leaves.

Leaf development and support

Juvenile leaves are smaller, softer, and less prominently veined. As the plant matures and climbs, blades broaden, secondary venation becomes more defined, and the velvety surface develops a richer depth. Appressed contact with a damp, textured support improves water flow and leaf size.

Propagation and growth notes

  • Propagation: Stem cuttings rooted in moist sphagnum moss or water before moving into substrate.
  • Semi-hydroponics: Adaptable with gradual transition; stable high humidity is essential.
  • Pruning: Remove senescent or damaged leaves to maintain airflow and encourage fresh growth.

Common issues and solutions

  • Leaf browning: Low humidity or erratic watering; increase humidity and stabilise care routine.
  • Slow growth: Improve light intensity (still filtered) and maintain regular feeding.
  • Pests: Watch for thrips, spider mites, and mealybugs; treat promptly with targeted controls.

Safety

Contains insoluble calcium oxalate crystals; avoid ingestion and contact with eyes or mouth. Keep out of reach of children and pets.

her eyes focused on it like laser beams and I could see the bloodlust in ...
I have bought all sorts of toys for my VIzsla, but nothing has made her more crazy than this rabbit. I have bought her stuffed mallard ducks, kong toys, fluffy sheep and all manner of hard, soft, stringy and other toy - but when I first pulled this rabbit out of the shipping box, her eyes focused on it like laser beams and I could see the bloodlust in her soul. The rabbit's head was barely clear of the cardboard box when Rosie was lunging at it. I'm tall and she had no hope of getting it, but she bounced off my thighs and made another jump in anticipation of the rabbit coming lower. She was of single purpose and nothing was going to stop her - this rabbit needed to be killed. It was hard to even throw it for her, because each time I moved my arm to swing it, she lunged for it... I had to go with the overhand throw, and she still leaped to pluck it from the air as it sailed a good three feet above her head. When it bounced along the ground, she was on it in an instant. The rabbit has squeakers in all four of its paws (and its head) and a "grunt" type of noisemaker in its body. It started grunting and squeaking at the same time as Rosie began her bloody work. I had to keep telling her to calm down so that my $15 investment would get me at least a dollar a minute of viewing pleasure watching my pooch eviscerate the thing. I managed to distract her by pointing outside and saying "whassat?!?!?" and as she looked for a moment, I snatched it from under her jaws, only to hear the crisp clack of her teeth as she made a last desperate attempt on the rabbit's ear as it vanished around the corner of the couch. I have bought two of these rabbits. I sort of wish I had Jeff Bezos money. I would buy a hundred of them and make a ball pit for Rosie, but made from these rabbits, then I would record the results and upload it to YouTube as my submission for the definition of bliss. I'm sure you are getting the idea... dogs go NUTS for this thing. I think it's a combination of the numerous squeakers, the type of squeakers (especially the grunty one), the crackly material in the ears, the softness of the rabbit, the coloration of the fur that looks so real and lifelife, the innocent look on this thing's face that lets dogs know they can just go full Ghenghis Khan on this thing with reckless abandon. The only downside is it doesn't last. Not if your dog has the heart of a warrior. I am sure some day Rosie will develop some chill... now she has no chill and the Colossal RABBIT is her plaything. In the future I'll get her another and maybe she'll lay her head on it to sleep. But it sure is fun watching my little girl act like I used to when I was 8 years old and got that present I didn't think I was going to get (but hoped beyond hope I would) at christmas time. It's worth the price to see a puppy going full-puppy on this thing. Hats off to the people who designed it - it's effect on dogs is like wearing a Palpatine Imperial Guard outfit, dousing yourself in heifer pheromones and walking up to the angriest bull you can find while he's eating dinner and punching him as hard as you can in the gonads. That's how dogs react to this rabbit. It's divine.
