Polly African Mask Alocasia (Alocasia x amazonica 'Polly')

Polly African Mask Alocasia is a compact tropical houseplant valued for its dark glossy foliage, bold pale veining, and dramatic architectural shape. Its arrow-shaped leaves have wavy edges and a high-contrast pattern that brings a refined tropical look to tabletops, plant stands, offices, shelves, and bright indoor corners. This smaller selection offers the striking look of an elephant ear without requiring the space of larger Alocasia types. With bright indirect light, warmth, humidity, steady moisture, and a chunky well-drained mix, Polly African Mask Alocasia adds bold foliage detail and strong structure to indoor plant collections.

Distinctive Features

Polly African Mask Alocasia is best known for its deep green to nearly black, shield-like leaves marked with prominent white to silvery green veins. The foliage has a glossy surface, scalloped to wavy margins, and a dramatic arrowhead shape that makes the plant stand out even at a compact size. Its upright clumping habit keeps the plant manageable while still giving it a strong sculptural presence. Flowers may appear occasionally on mature plants as a spathe and spadix, but this Alocasia is grown primarily for its foliage and rarely blooms as a houseplant.

Growing Conditions

  • Sun: Grows best in bright indirect light, with protection from harsh direct sun that can scorch or mark the foliage.
  • Soil: Prefers a chunky, fertile, well-drained aroid mix with organic matter and added aeration from materials such as bark, perlite, or similar amendments.
  • Water: Keep soil lightly and evenly moist during active growth, allowing the upper portion to dry slightly before watering again, and avoid soggy conditions.
  • USDA Zones: Best grown as a houseplant in most climates and outdoors year-round only in frost-free tropical conditions, generally USDA Zones 10 to 12.
  • Mature Size: Typically reaches about 1 to 2 feet tall and 1 to 2 feet wide indoors, depending on pot size, light, humidity, and care.
  • Habit: Forms a compact, upright, clumping tropical houseplant with glossy arrow-shaped leaves rising from the base on sturdy petioles.

Ideal Uses

  • Focal Point: Use as a dramatic indoor focal point on plant stands, tabletops, office desks, shelves, or bright corners where its dark leaves and pale veining can stand out.
  • Tabletop Plant: Place in a decorative container where its compact size and bold foliage can add impact without taking up much room.
  • Collector Plant: Feature in a specialty tropical plant collection where its glossy dark foliage, wavy edges, and bright veining can be appreciated up close.
  • Interior Accent: Pair with lighter green houseplants, ferns, pothos, or trailing plants to create contrast in leaf color, shape, and texture.
  • Container Planting: Grow in a well-drained pot with drainage holes, using a container that supports steady moisture without trapping excess water.

Low Maintenance Care

  • Watering: Water when the upper soil begins to dry, then allow excess water to drain fully so the roots stay moist but never waterlogged.
  • Humidity: Provide moderate to high humidity indoors to help reduce leaf edge browning and support clean foliage growth.
  • Light Care: Keep near a bright window with filtered light and rotate the pot occasionally for balanced growth.
  • Leaf Care: Wipe leaves gently with a damp cloth to remove dust and keep the glossy surface and pale veining visible.
  • Fertilizing: Feed lightly during the active growing season with a balanced houseplant fertilizer, following label directions.
  • Dormancy: Reduce watering if growth slows in winter, since Alocasia may rest or drop leaves when light and temperatures decline.

Why Choose Polly African Mask Alocasia?

  • Dramatic Foliage: Displays dark glossy arrow-shaped leaves with bold white to silvery green veining for strong indoor contrast.
  • Compact Size: Fits tabletops, shelves, plant stands, offices, and smaller rooms better than many larger elephant ear plants.
  • Architectural Shape: Adds sculptural form and tropical texture to interior plant displays without relying on flowers.
  • High-Impact Accent: Creates a striking look in decorative containers, bright rooms, and foliage-focused plant collections.
  • Container Friendly: Performs well in pots when given bright indirect light, steady moisture, warmth, humidity, and excellent drainage.

Polly African Mask Alocasia is an excellent choice for anyone who wants a compact houseplant with bold contrast, glossy texture, and refined tropical appeal. Its dark leaves, bright veining, wavy edges, and upright habit make it a standout plant for bright indoor spaces where foliage detail and structure matter.

A Poetic Parable of Silence and Resistance
Format: Paperback
Ilya Kaminsky's Deaf Republic is a haunting narrative of political turmoil and collective silence, where a community's deafness becomes a powerful act of defiance. Through lyrical verse, Kaminsky weaves a tale of love, loss, and resistance, capturing the profound consequences of political violence on ordinary lives. This collection is a poignant testament to the resilience of the human spirit amidst oppression and serves as a stark reminder of our moral responsibilities in troubled times.

One of the most original and moving books of poems I've ever read
Format: Paperback
Ilya Kaminsky is practically a legend, at this point, and deservedly so. This is his second book of poems, and proves well worth the wait. The individual poems are beautiful and strange; together, they comprise a kind of allegory for our times, and manage to be both somehow light-of-heart, somehow luminous, and also seriously profound. I would recommend this book even to those who don't usually read poetry, because it's beyond poetry, truly.

Beautifully written and good quality book
Format: Paperback, Format: Paperback
I received the book earlier than the estimated date. I love this poem collection of Ilya Kaminsky. Although it describes the social unrest in an unknown place (and unfamiliar to me), his poems are beautifully written with strong images and music. THe paper quality and the book are so new and lovely. I couldn't think that it is used (as it stated).

Life: A challenge in many ways in all cultures
Format: Kindle
I heard Ilya Kaminsky read his poems at Chautauqua this past summer. Over powering and dynamic to hear his voice speak his words... about his life experiences need to be remembered. A must read and if possible with the audio.

A brilliant poetic narrative whose lines leap off the pages which turn themselves.
Format: Paperback
When you get to the end, you wonder how Kaminsky worked his wondrous magic, how it's possible to think and write poetry like that. The poem is a story about Vasenka, a mythical town somewhere in the Ukraine, occupied by the Soviet army during an unspecified period of time. It is an allegory of the cruelty of occupation, the futility of the resistance of a few, and the deafness of the silent majority, a deafness that courageously resists the occupation and a deafness that hardens the heart and ignores the evil surrounding them. It could have happened anywhere anytime. The occupiers could have been Nazis, Ottoman Turks, American, English, or Spanish. The poetry is piercingly sharp, visionary, breathless and the metaphors are the likes of which you've never heard before, lines like “the sound we do not hear lifts the gulls off the water,” “Our hearing doesn't weaken, but something silent in us strengthens,” or “In these avenues, deafness is our only barricade.” This is drop-dead beautiful poetry.
