Gardenia jasminoides is a shrubby plant from the Rubiaceae family, native to East Asia. It is especially valued for its white, highly fragrant flowers, which have a shape similar to that of roses. The flowers can vary in size, but are generally large and full, with multiple layers of delicate petals.
Gardenia jasminoides is also known as Cape Gardenia or Common Gardenia.
Caring for Gardenia jasminoides requires attention to ensure abundant blooming and the plant’s health:
-
Light: Prefers bright places, but sheltered from strong sunlight. Filtered light is ideal.
-
Soil: The soil should be well-drained, acidic (pH between 5 and 6.5), rich in organic matter. Use special soil mixes for acid-loving plants.
-
Watering: Gardenia needs consistently moist soil, but not soaked. Let the top layer of soil dry slightly before watering again. Water with low lime content is preferred to avoid yellowing of the leaves.
-
Humidity: This plant loves high humidity. To increase humidity, you can use a humidifier, place the plant on a tray with wet pebbles, or regularly mist the leaves.
-
Temperature: Ideally, the temperature should be between 18 and 24 degrees Celsius during the day and a bit cooler at night. Avoid exposure to temperatures below 10 degrees Celsius.
-
Fertilizing: Fertilize the gardenia once a month with a fertilizer for acid-loving or flowering plants, from spring to autumn, to support growth and flowering.
-
Pruning: Pruning is done after the plant has flowered, to remove faded flowers and encourage new growth. It is important not to cut the new shoots, where next year’s flowers will form.
Gardenia jasminoides is often used in perfumery and skincare products due to the highly fragrant essential oil extracted from its flowers.
Symbolically, gardenia is often associated with purity, love, and grace, making it a popular choice for wedding bouquets and other special occasions.
