This rare heirloom variety, Physalis pruinosa, produces small, golden fruits wrapped in delicate, lantern-like husks. As the fruit ripens, it naturally drops to the ground when their sweetness peaks. This is where ground cherries get their name.

Ground cherries are easy to grow, early maturing, and well suited for home gardens of all sizes. The fruit offers a naturally sweet flavor often described as a blend of pineapple and vanilla, making it a favorite for fresh snacking and homemade desserts. Plants are also known for their drought tolerance and dependable productivity.

Sweet, Early-Maturing Heirloom Fruit:
Ground Cherry (Physalis pruinosa) is valued for:

  • Small golden fruits with a sweet, tropical flavor
  • Papery husks that protect fruit as it ripens
  • Early harvests and reliable yields

Why Customers Love Ground Cherries:

  • Unique, rare heirloom fruit not commonly found in stores
  • Sweet pineapple-vanilla flavor enjoyed fresh or cooked
  • Easy to grow with good drought tolerance
  • Early maturing plants ideal for short growing seasons
  • Versatile use in desserts, preserves, and snacks

How to Use / How to Grow:
Start seeds indoors 6–8 weeks before the last frost and transplant outdoors once temperatures are warm and stable. Plant in full sun with well-drained soil and provide moderate watering. Plants grow similarly to tomatoes and benefit from spacing that allows good air circulation. Fruits are ready to harvest when they fall from the plant and turn golden inside their husks.

Harvest & Use:
Collect ripe fruits from the ground as they drop or gently pick when husks dry and fruit is fully colored. Enjoy fresh, or use in jams, pies, sauces, or baked goods. Ground cherries store well in their husks for short periods and can also be dried or preserved.

Great buy for an extreme chewer
Size: Large
I received this several days ago for my pit husky mix she is an aggressive chewer and it is still holding up, it's not as big as I thought it would be but it is big enough to wear she will not choke on it or get it lodged in her mouth and she loves it she carries it around everywhere definitely a good buy for us and we'll be buying more

Best Bones for My big dogs
Right when I gave my dogs these Willie Bones they went to chewing and would not put them down! They are the type of dogs that tear up stuffed toys and balls easily. These are really tough though!

Great bone for all dogs!!
I loved this bone! See my use of past tense 😂 I am so sad I bought this for my very destructive yorkie/shitzhu mix and he loved it so much! He was so at peace with it. I am sad to say that after having it for about a week or two it disappeared. I never let my dog go outside with it and I have tore my house to PIECES in search of it. He really misses it, I think I miss it more for him I can only hope this company will be having more available in the near future. This is a great bone for all dogs in my opinion. I managed to get my friends to even buy one for their dogs and the of course are just as pleased. Well until we can purchase another I will leave a great review regardless. Thanks Willie Bones for saving me and my dog

Was skeptical but my pup loves it
My dog is a heavy chewer but normally likes stuffed animals and tasty chews. I’m always trying to find something to occupy him that doesn’t fall apart. I didn’t think he would like a rubber toy but I was wrong. What I like about this bone is that it’s actually a “pretty” toy and it has a big hole through the middle that you can put treats/peanut butter inside. The hole is also good because the toy has a little “give” which makes it easier for my dog to chew on it. And though I can see teeth marks all over the rubber, pup hasn’t managed to destroy it after a week. He even loves to play tug with it. It’s a good quality toy.
