This is the darkest colored sweet basil that I have ever grown. It is a hybrid variety that holds its color better than other purple basils I have tried. Red Rubin hybrid basil grows fast and produces large, broad, glossy dark purple leaves. Seems to have a pretty high disease resistance too. Flavor is more savory when compared to the standard green sweet basil. I very rarely recommend a hybrid cultivar unless it performs well in my garden, and this one does.

In Florida we have issues with black spots forming on basil leaves usually caused by fungus from high humidity in the air. In my garden I get black spots due to leaf miners. This tends to happen at the end of summer like in September. I recommend the use of garden soap sprays, hydrogen peroxide spray (1 cup of hydrogen peroxide per gallon of water), or just prune the entire plant to encourage new healthy growth.

PLANTING

Ocimum basilicum x purpurascens

Germination: 5-10 days

Seed Sowing Depth: lightly cover with soil, about 1/4 inch

Sowing: Can direct sow or start in seed trays 6-8 weeks before the last frost date. Not frost hardy and does not like high heat. If your in Florida, start seeds in September and grow thru fall, winter, and spring. If well taken care of, the plant can survive our crazy hot summers.
