On the river, I was fascinated by the different plants that called the desert their home. Most impressive were the cacti that grew from the molten hot sand and rocks. With July being the beginning of monsoon season, we actually experienced some storms and rains. The result was that the cactuses began to bloom around us as we traveled downriver. The Prickly Pear became ripe with gorgeous, plump, purple fruits. I spent one early morning painting one of these Prickly Pears before the sun came up. Once the death ray hit, the only place you wanted to be was on the boat, in the cool waters of the Colorado.
