Dracaena (Sansevieria) zeylanica 'Fan' – Sculptural Statement Plant with Minimal Fuss

Dracaena zeylanica 'Fan' is a bold, architectural cultivar often sold under the outdated name Sansevieria zeylanica. While most plants in cultivation are actually forms of Dracaena trifasciata, this particular form stands out with its symmetrical, fan-shaped leaf arrangement. Native to rocky dry zones in Sri Lanka, this drought-tolerant perennial thrives indoors with barely any maintenance. The upright, strappy leaves create a natural focal point – ideal for minimal and modern interiors.

Leaf Pattern, Growth Habit and Structure

  • Shape: Sword-like leaves emerging in a fan formation from a central rosette.
  • Color and Texture: Deep green blades with light horizontal bands; leathery and upright.
  • Height Range: Grows slowly to 70 – 100 cm in containers under stable indoor conditions.
  • Visual Impact: Strong, vertical silhouette – perfect for design-led rooms or narrow spaces.
  • Growth Rate: Slow to moderate; thrives when slightly root-bound.

Light, Water, and Soil – Keeping Dracaena 'Fan' Happy

This plant thrives on neglect – just stick to these key points:

  • Lighting: Tolerates low light but shows best color in moderate to bright, indirect light.
  • Watering: Let the substrate dry out completely before watering again. Overwatering is the most common issue.
  • Soil Mix: Use a well-draining medium – cactus or succulent mixes are ideal.
  • Temperature Range: 15 – 30°C indoors; avoid placing it in cold drafts or wet bathrooms.
  • Humidity: Standard room humidity is fine. No misting needed.
  • Feeding: A balanced liquid fertilizer every 6 – 8 weeks supports steady growth.

Common Issues and How to Fix Them

  • Soggy Soil or Root Rot: Always use fast-draining soil and pots with drainage holes.
  • Yellow Leaves: Usually a sign of excess water or poor light. Adjust conditions accordingly.
  • Brown Tips: Caused by low humidity or inconsistent watering – avoid placing near heaters or vents.
  • Pests: Rare but watch for mealybugs or spider mites. Treat with insecticidal soap or use beneficial insects.

Propagation Tips and Growth Behavior

  • Division: Mature plants can be divided at the rhizome. Let cut sections dry for 1 – 2 days before replanting.
  • Leaf Cuttings: Can also be propagated via single leaf segments placed in dry, gritty soil.

Toxicity Notice

Like other Dracaena species, 'Fan' contains saponins that are toxic to pets when ingested. Keep out of reach of cats, dogs, and curious small children.

Botanical Background and Natural Range

Native to Sri Lanka’s dry, rocky habitats, Dracaena zeylanica evolved to withstand drought, heat, and poor soils. What’s often sold as this species in cultivation is frequently a robust form of Dracaena trifasciata, but the growth traits are largely identical. Its resilience makes it ideal for homes, studios, and offices alike.

Etymology – The Meaning Behind the Name

The genus name Dracaena derives from the Greek "drakaina," meaning "female dragon," referring to the red resin (dragon’s blood) produced by some species. The species name zeylanica comes from “Ceylon,” the former name of Sri Lanka – its native region.

Great book and a million uses!
Format: Paperback
This works perfect to help create outfits that are perfectly coordinated! I grab one thing I really want to wear, find that color in the book, and then match everything else to the other colors. My daughter also uses it for paintings and art projects.

Like the other one (Vol 1) but different (Vol 2) with more.
Format: Paperback
Volume 2 continues the great color combinations of the 1st Volume, but the combinations are more complex, with more colors. There's even a section of art in the form of paintings, prints, woven work, etc. that you see on one page while on the opposite page is the breakdown of the colorations in bars with no image. What this does is show how the art works, and then how the combinations also work. Also more of the simplified 2 and 3 combinations that I think I prefer as more minimal. Again, these are ranged from light and airy to darkly saturated -and all curiously satisfying and worth study and trying them out. On the computer it's possible to match any tone or hue, so there's a path that only requires finding the right starting color then paying attention to the combination. Not that it's an end-all, but a beginning. Any of those can be shifted or modified with ease but it depends on how they fit a real-time application and not a formula. But the horizons have already been expanded so there's more, and even more.

Great book to help establish a palette for a software, web or art project
Format: Paperback
I love this book for helping me establish a color palette for art projects that I want a Japanese feel to. Also just generally good for getting inspiration for color palettes that just plain look good. I've always, since I can remember from my youth, felt drawn to the Japanese color combinations in kimono. fashion, origami paper and even toys. Maybe it's a consequence of growing up in Hawaii with all the Japanese influences I had -- or, as I suspect, it's just really good color application. This book helps me find the colors I want that go together the way I want. I use the examples in this book with a Color Muse to pick my digital color palette.
