The Maranta leuconeura Kerchoveana, also called the Prayer Plant, is a fascinating indoor plant native to the tropical forests of Brazil, where it naturally grows in moist, shaded undergrowth. Its light green foliage adorned with symmetrical brown spots is remarkable — but it’s its behavior that truly captivates: its leaves fold vertically at night like praying hands and unfold at dawn, every day, without fail.

Non-toxic, air-purifying, and particularly tolerant of low light. Discover it in our Maranta collection and in our selection of non-toxic plants.

Which Maranta variety to choose?

The Maranta genus offers several varieties with distinct patterns and colors, all sharing the same daily movement:

  • Maranta leuconeura Kerchoveana (this plant) — light green foliage with symmetrical brown spots, soothing and graphic patterns. The classic elegant version.
  • Maranta leuconeura 'Fascinator' — dark green foliage with striking red veins. The version with strong contrasts.
  • Maranta leuconeura 'Lemon Lime' — variegated foliage in lemon green and dark green with red veins. The bright and colorful version.
  • Mix of 3 Maranta — set of 3 different varieties to create a varied Maranta composition.

Why choose the Kerchoveana? Its symmetrical brown spots on a light green background create a softer, more soothing pattern than the red veins of the 'Fascinator' — it’s the most elegant and discreet version, perfect for blending into any decor style.

Exposure & placement

The Maranta Kerchoveana is one of the few graphic plants that truly tolerates low light — a valuable quality for dimly lit interiors. Our light and humidity guide details how to optimize these two factors for your shade plants.

  • Exposure: partial shade to shade — tolerates low light, avoids direct sun that fades the patterns.
  • Ideal: office, hallway, bedroom, dimly lit living room, or shelf away from windows.
  • Temperature: 18 to 25 °C, without sudden changes or drafts.
  • Substrate: light, rich, and well-draining — universal potting soil with perlite.

In a very dark spot, the leaves become etiolated and the spots fade — a sign to move the plant to a bit more indirect light.

Watering & care

The Maranta prefers a slightly moist substrate without ever being soaked. Its main sensitivity: water quality. Use filtered or rainwater — the lime and chlorine in tap water cause brown edges on its delicate leaves. The finger test remains the most reliable method.

  • Watering: moderate — keep the substrate slightly moist without soaking.
  • Frequency: about once a week in spring-summer, slightly reduced in winter.
  • Drainage: essential — use a pot with drainage holes and well-draining substrate.
  • Humidity: prefers 60 to 70% humidity — mist regularly or place near other plants.
  • Fertilizer: once a month in spring-summer with a diluted liquid fertilizer for green plants.

Brown edges on the leaves almost always indicate air that is too dry or water that is too hard — two easy problems to fix.

Decor ideas & plant pairings

Its graphic foliage and daily movement make it an accent plant that brings life to any space — even the darkest ones.

Verdeia tips

  • Watch the leaf movement — they fold vertically in the evening and unfold in the morning, like praying hands. This phenomenon called nyctinasty is triggered by light variations and naturally occurs daily. If the leaves stop moving, the plant is probably lacking light.
  • Filtered or rainwater only — lime and chlorine in tap water accumulate in the substrate and gradually burn the leaf edges. A water filter or simply letting the water sit for 24 hours at room temperature significantly reduces chlorine.
  • Always high humidity — below 50% humidity, leaf edges start to brown. Mist the foliage several times a week or place the pot on a saucer filled with moist clay pebbles to create a more humid microclimate around the plant.
  • Non-toxic and air-purifying — Maranta poses no risk to cats, dogs, or children, and helps improve indoor air quality. A rare combination for such a graphic plant.

delightful read
Format: Kindle
What a delightful read. The characters are awesome, the plot was so good, I loved it. I was intrigued and it kept me wanting more. Told in multiple pov, the book sucks you in and doesn’t let go. I cannot wait to read the next book.

not bad
Format: Kindle
I loved the plot of this book. The characters just didn’t have a lot of depth. The connections and “love” just weren’t communicated very well in the writing. The author didn’t write the sweet psycho trope very well at all either. Lachlan was just a mess of a character.

A Beta Worth Rooting For
Format: Kindle
In Spare, Violet Fox flips the omegaverse on its head, giving us a Beta heroine determined to make her mark. Joining the Beta Trials to support her sick father, she's thrown into a pack that doesn't want her, especially the possessive Alphas. But here's the twist: their sweet Omega turns out to be her scent match. Cue the angst, forbidden tension, and a slow-burn romance that will make your heart ache in the best way. Violet Fox delivers an emotional, refreshing take on the genre, proving Betas aren't "spares." They're stars.

Beta, Alpha, Omega oh my!
Format: Kindle
Omegas are precious and given to Alphas & their packs... but the Betas want in too. To this end, the Beta government is rolling out its trial of assigning a Beta to each Alpha-Omega pack. But forcing a Beta into a pack where they are not wanted will not end well... Of course, no one expected the Omega to fall for the assigned Beta. Great read and cliffhanger

A familiar story, just with…..less.
Format: Kindle
So, as other reviewers make clear, this is very similar to Pack Darling and The Beta. It’s much closer aligned with The Beta, in plot and maybe more like Pack Darling with characters. That being said, I don’t hate this…..but it wasn’t great either. It’s both books mentioned but just….less. Less angst, less emotion, less feeling. The plot feels very half fleshed out, and the “bad guy” feels underwhelming. I didn’t really feel any real emotions from and of the male leads, except maybe Oliver. The others fell sorta flat for me. And Mika makes herself out to be this big bad ass straight outta training and then we never see it from here again with the one fitting room incident as the exception. SPOILER: The whole, “Oh, I’m actually probably an Omega, but I don’t wanna be but I do actually wanna be but no one can ever know my secret that I do nothing to hide “ thing fell so flat. She never commutes to believing she was secretly an omega, but also mentions her “secret” a lot. It just felt so manufactured. I’m intrigued enough to read part 2 and see how the author closes everything out, but this is not one I’ll recommend or ever come back to.
