Sedum Adolphii: The Coppertone Stonecrop Guide

The Sedum Adolphii, also known as Golden Sedum or Coppertone Stonecrop, is a stunning and popular succulent prized for its vibrant, fleshy leaves. Native to Mexico, this low-growing plant is a favorite among gardeners for its low-maintenance nature and ability to add a splash of color to any collection. The leaves are typically a bright green with golden-yellow tips, which can transform into a beautiful orange or reddish-copper hue when exposed to plenty of sunlight.

Growing Tips

  • Light: Sedum Adolphii thrives in bright, direct sunlight. For the best color development (that signature "coppertone" look), aim for at least 6 hours of full sun a day. If kept in lower light conditions, the leaves will remain green. When moving your plant to a sunnier spot, do so gradually to prevent sunburn. This plant can be grown indoors on a sunny windowsill, but it often performs best outdoors.

  • Temperature: This succulent is heat-tolerant but not cold-hardy. It thrives in temperatures between 65°F to 80°F (18°C to 27°C). It can withstand brief temperature drops but should be protected from frost and freezing conditions. If you live in a colder climate (USDA zones below 9), it's best to grow it in a container that can be brought indoors during the winter.

  • Watering: Like most succulents, Sedum Adolphii is drought-tolerant and susceptible to overwatering. The "soak and dry" method is ideal. Water thoroughly until water drains from the bottom of the pot, then allow the soil to dry out completely before watering again. Reduce watering significantly during its dormant period in the fall and winter. Wrinkled leaves can be a sign that the plant needs a drink.

  • Soil Preparation: The key to a healthy Sedum Adolphii is excellent drainage. Use a porous, well-draining soil mix specifically formulated for cacti and succulents. You can also create your own mix by combining potting soil with inorganic materials like perlite, coarse sand, or pumice to improve aeration and prevent waterlogging, which can lead to root rot.

  • Propagation: Sedum Adolphii is incredibly easy to propagate, making it a great choice for sharing or expanding your collection.

    • Leaf Cuttings: Gently twist a healthy, firm leaf from the stem, making sure to get the entire leaf. Let the leaf callous over for a few days to a week. Then, place it on top of well-draining soil. Water sparingly until roots and a new plantlet begin to form.

    • Stem Cuttings: Use a clean, sharp knife or scissors to cut a healthy stem. Allow the cut end to callous for a few days before planting it in a pot with succulent soil. New roots will form from the calloused end.

    • Seeds: While possible, propagation from seeds is a slower process and may not produce a plant identical to the parent, especially if it is a hybrid variety.

Dog approved!
My dogs love this. This is the 3rd time I have bought them. They are entertained for hours and keeping their teeth strong. They pay me no attention when they have this toy. 😂

Our Dog Loves This One
We got our dog two nylabones and this benebone and he really prefers this one. Like the nylabones he barely even looked at, but he loves this one so much it's starting to splinter off a little. Apparently it can just be sanded down again but I'll probably end up getting more of these so that we can switch them out. I noticed that the shape also helps him be able to handle it with his paws.

Initially showed little interest, then decided she loved it
The product itself looks great and is clearly very well made but my dog had zero interest initially in this which I find odd because many other similar toys she has attacked. Update —- several weeks later all of a sudden my dog decided she liked this and started chewing on it and has been her favorite - go figure Update 2 — it’s become her favorite chew and she’s obsessed with it! My older dog started chewing on it, and it broke one of her old teeth!
