Alocasia cucullata

Alocasia cucullata is an upright Alocasia with glossy green leaves and a clumping base. Mature plants can develop several shoots from the base.

Alocasia cucullata can reach around 65 cm tall. Indoors, size depends on light, warmth, pot size and age. The leaves are smooth, rounded and slightly cupped, with a soft hooded look.

Leaf shape and growth

The leaves are broad and heart-shaped with a gentle curve. Stems grow upright from the base, and older plants can form several shoots.

New leaves emerge upright, then settle into position as they mature. The glossy surface shows dust, water marks and pest damage quickly, so regular leaf checks are useful.

  • Glossy, rounded leaves with a soft curve
  • Upright, clumping growth
  • Upright habit that broadens with age
  • Can reach around 100 cm tall
  • Glossy green leaves on upright petioles

Origin and growing conditions

This species comes from a wide range across Asia, from Sri Lanka and the Himalaya to southern China and Indo-China. It grows in warm, humid conditions and is widely cultivated.

Indoors, it prefers steady warmth, filtered light and even moisture. The roots need air as well as water, so the mix should drain well from top to bottom.

Water and light

  • Light: Bright, indirect light or soft morning sun
  • Watering: Water thoroughly, then let excess drain
  • Substrate: Loose mix that stays lightly moist and drains freely
  • Temperature: Keep above 18 °C; grows best in warm conditions
  • Humidity: Around 50–70% is usually enough for steady leaf opening
  • Feeding: Light, regular feeding during active growth
  • Pot choice: Use a stable pot with drainage
  • Mineral substrates: Can adapt to mineral or semi-hydro substrates if the change is gradual

Pot size and moisture

Keeping the pot close to the root size helps prevent excess moisture. Large pots can stay wet at the bottom, which can stress the roots.

Repot when the roots fill the container or the mix loses its loose structure. Increase pot size gradually and keep the plant warm and stable after repotting.

Common issues

  • One yellow leaf can be normal as the plant grows
  • Several yellow leaves together suggest root or watering issues
  • Soft stems often point to cold, wet soil
  • Dry edges can come from uneven watering, dry air or buildup in the mix
  • Smaller leaves may follow stress, low light or tired substrate
  • Leaning growth usually comes from light reaching the plant from one side
  • Watch for pests like spider mites, thrips and mealybugs

Propagation and care

Remove fully yellow leaves at the base. Keep healthy leaves in place, as they feed the plant while new shoots develop.

Divide rooted shoots only when each piece has enough roots to keep growing after separation. Mature plants may produce a green spathe and spadix. Remove faded inflorescences with clean scissors once they start to dry.

Safety

This plant contains irritating oxalate crystals. Keep it away from pets and children, and use gloves when pruning, repotting or dividing the plant.

Botanical background

Alocasia cucullata was given its current name by George Don in 1839, based on the earlier name Arum cucullatum published by João de Loureiro. The species is native from Sri Lanka and the Himalayan region to southern China and Indo-China. The name cucullata means “hooded”, referring to the hood-like form seen in the plant’s flowers.

Might be the Goldilocks blanket
Color: 04 - Sage Green, Size: Throw (50" X 60"), Color: 04 - Sage Green, Size: Throw (50" X 60")
Everybody loves these blankets. Couch throw or super comforting blanket on top of bed covers. My wife selected the first. Now we own 4 or 5. Wife, son, couch, gifts to niece and father. Easy to wash; comes out new again. Doesn't feel cheap or low quality textile like. Feels great light-medium weight! Not too hot. Not too thin or light. Just might be the goldilocks blanket.

Great buy, soft, fluffy, great colors, warm, fun!
Color: Purple, Size: Queen(90"x90")
This is a very very soft queen blanket, just what I wanted. The dark purple color is what I wanted as well. As I put it on the bed the 1st time I noticed a lot of "fluff" in the air & on the sheets. So I washed it just to a)get the extra "fluff" off and b) to get the bubble effect more fluffy. It came vacuum packed and wasn't as fluffed up as I'd hoped. So, It washed beautifully and I put it in the dryer with 4 wool balls & scent drops I'd also ordered from Amazon. I used this instead of a softener sheet because I read that the wool balls make laundry softer, static free and smelling fresh & in the case of this typeblanket or throw, fluffier. The blanket came out of the dryer perfect! Much softer, much fluffier - you could really notice the bubbles - and there wasn't much lint in the lint catcher, but it was enough to stop it from shedding little fluffy bits! I have this blanket on my bed now. It's warm, lightweight, and the bubbles and color make me smile when I look at it. Very happy with purchase!

Small and so cute
This blanket is so cute and perfect for adding a cozy touch to any space! The color is a rich, warm brown that looks great with my other decor. It’s small, but that’s what makes it perfect as an accent piece—it looks amazing draped over a chair or folded on a shelf. The material feels soft and high-quality. It didn’t have any weird smell after opening it. I would say it should be used more for decoration than everyday use. It adds just the right amount of texture without being bulky or taking up too much space. Works perfect as a drape over side of bed, chair, or blanket ladder. For the price, I think it’s a great find. It’s stylish, simple, and really ties the room together. If you’re looking for an affordable way to elevate your decor, this is it!

Cheap material
Color: Ivory, Size: Throw(50"x60")
Does not look like product pictures. Different design and texture. Kept anyway because I chose more for color. After washing a couple of times, these blankets appear VERY worn. They're thinner than preferred and don't wear well. A cheap product for a cheap price. The color was as expected though.
