Colocasia esculenta 'Redemption' - Key Features and Care Guide

Colocasia esculenta 'Redemption' (variety ‘COREDE’) is a remarkable hybrid created by Brian Williams in 2016. This striking plant stands out for its dramatic foliage, featuring neon pink veins that radiate from a bright central area, contrasting sharply with its glossy black leaves. As the plant matures, the true beauty of its foliage unfolds, making it an impressive specimen for any indoor or outdoor collection. With a mature height of 4 to 6 feet, this clumping Colocasia adds bold color and texture to any setting, thriving best when provided with the right care.

Colocasia esculenta 'Redemption' Unique Features

  • Striking Foliage: The most notable feature of Colocasia 'Redemption' is its vibrant, neon pink central vein and surrounding pink veins that extend to the edges of each jet-black leaf. This bold coloration is rare among Colocasia hybrids and creates a stunning visual contrast.
  • Growth Habit: This variety exhibits a clumping growth pattern, making it an excellent choice for creating a dense, eye-catching display. It reaches its full potential when provided with ample space to spread.
  • Mature Size: When mature, Colocasia 'Redemption' can grow up to 2 m in height, showcasing its large, dramatic leaves. Juvenile plants will initially have less vibrant coloration, but as they age, the foliage deepens in color and becomes more pronounced.
  • Hardiness: This plant is hardy in USDA zones 8 and above. In colder regions, it can survive with proper winter protection, such as a thick mulch layer.

Colocasia esculenta 'Redemption' Care Guide

To ensure Colocasia esculenta 'Redemption' thrives, follow these care instructions:

  • Light: Prefers bright, indirect light to partial shade. Direct sunlight can scorch the leaves, especially during the hottest parts of the day.
  • Water: Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged. Colocasia prefers a humid environment and regular watering, especially during the growing season.
  • Soil: Use a well-draining, rich, organic soil mix. Adding compost or organic matter can improve soil structure and fertility.
  • Temperature: Ideal growing temperatures range between 18°C to 27°C. Protect from temperatures below 7°C, as prolonged exposure to cold can damage the plant.
  • Humidity: High humidity levels are ideal. If the indoor air is dry, consider using a humidifier to maintain humidity around the plant.
  • Fertilization: Feed with a balanced, water-soluble fertilizer every two weeks during the growing season. Avoid fertilizing during the dormant winter months.
  • Pruning: Remove any yellowing or damaged leaves to encourage new growth and maintain the plant's aesthetic appeal.

Common Issues and Solutions for Colocasia esculenta 'Redemption'

  • Yellowing Leaves: Often a sign of overwatering or poor drainage. Ensure the pot has adequate drainage and adjust watering accordingly.
  • Browning Edges: This could be due to low humidity or underwatering. Increase humidity levels around the plant and ensure consistent watering.
  • Pests: Watch for spider mites, aphids, and mealybugs. Regularly check the undersides of leaves and use insecticidal soap , neem oil, or use beneficial insects to treat infestations.
  • Drooping Leaves: This can indicate underwatering, low humidity, or root problems. Assess watering practices and soil conditions to remedy the issue.

Additional Growing Tips for Colocasia esculenta 'Redemption'

  • Placement: Colocasia 'Redemption' thrives in a spot with bright, indirect light and high humidity. It's an excellent choice for patios, conservatories, or well-lit indoor spaces.
  • Watering Consistency: Maintaining consistent moisture is crucial for healthy growth. Avoid letting the soil dry out completely between waterings.
  • Winter Care: In colder climates, bring the plant indoors or provide heavy mulch to protect the roots from freezing temperatures.

Understanding the origins and natural habitat of Colocasia esculenta and its hybrids like 'Redemption' can significantly enhance your ability to care for this plant. Colocasia species typically grow in humid, tropical regions, often near water bodies. Replicating these conditions as closely as possible will support vigorous growth and vibrant foliage.

Etymology of Colocasia esculenta 'Redemption'

The genus name "Colocasia" is derived from the ancient Greek word kolokasion, which was used by the botanist Dioscorides in the 1st century AD to refer to the edible roots of Colocasia esculenta and Nelumbo nucifera. The specific epithet esculenta means edible, referencing the plant's tubers, which are a staple food in many cultures.

Emotional development...
Format: Hardcover
Cattywampus Ash Van Otterloo This is the story of Delpha McGill, a girl that doesn’t like rules or keeping secrets. Delpha lives in a small town in rural Appalachia, Howler’s Hollow, where magic is not permitted. She discovers her grandmother’s hidden book of spells which she is determined to use to help her mother. Katybird Hearn has her own reasons for wanting to get her hands on the book of spells and has resolved nobody is going to stand in her way. She comes from a long line of witches. In the midst of their squabble, they unintentionally allow a curse to escape. The curse is so evil it wakes their dead ancestors, the Hearns and the McGills, The two girls must learn to work together if they are going to save the town from the zombies. The author uses great sensitivity in incorporating androgen insensitivity in the plot. Androgen insensitivity syndrome is a condition that affects sexual development before birth and during puberty. People with this condition are genetically male, with one X chromosome and one Y chromosome in each cell. Because their bodies are unable to respond to certain male sex hormones (called androgens), they may have mostly female external sex characteristics or signs of both male and female sexual development. Poverty, sorcery, fears, friendship, and ignorant biases are all a part of this book. Author Ash Van Otterloo portrays life in a southern country town in the mountains and he does so without being demeaning or patronizing. The characters are well fleshed out. While magic is part of the plot, it is merely a means to showcase the emotional development of the two girls. This is a fast-paced read. The target audience is 10-13 years of age.

Fun if a bit offbeat upper elementary fantasy
Format: Hardcover
I read this in one afternoon and have to say I enjoyed it. The cast of characters are incredibly diverse, and for the most part this is a believable story (despite the undead magicians and ridiculous outhouse) This story is a "Hatfields vs McCoys" if the two hillbilly families were magicians and were feuding over how they practice instead of over moonshine and land. This brings me to my first gripe with the novel. The dense dialogue in accents. For a middle grade book, the text is filled with a lot of phonetic spellings and backwards english. I guess it is to be atmospheric, but it just makes the characters seem dumb. And that is sad because they are not. Stubborn, and sometimes too preoccupied to see what is under their noses but not stupid. I sometimes felt that the characters had been written into a corner so there were multiple instances of "because magic" and convenient acts of random fortuitous "we have everything we need and don't have to search more because the Luck Gods were smiling". Once or twice I completely missed how the characters got from point A to point B and I Really dislike "wave a wand and everything is good and the mortals forget what happened". A little convenient magic written to solve a solution is fine. But the ending sort of feels a little flat when a Major concern for the entire novel is resolved by sleight of hand. On the whole though, the characters are likable, and age appropriate (though a bit whiny at times for this parent ;-p) and I liked that diversity isn't a "cause" its just an adjective...As in, there is a gay couple who act like every other parent in the story. There is a deaf younger brother who isn't treated as 'precious' but as a functioning human. Even one of the main characters is intersex and does question "Am I girl enough to be a witch". None of the cast of characters feels forced or out of place making this a nice addition to my kid's library. ARC free in exchange for an honest review.
