Sun Changing Begonia (Begonia soli-mutata)

Sun Changing Begonia is a striking foliage begonia grown for its deeply textured leaves and dramatic color contrast, making it a standout choice for bright indoor spaces, shaded patios, and collector-style containers. Its bold leaf surface gives it a more sculptural look than many begonias, so it can anchor a planting even when flowers are not the main attraction. The plant stays useful in smaller spaces while still delivering a strong tropical effect. When you want a begonia that feels rare, artistic, and full of personality, Sun Changing Begonia is an excellent choice.

Distinctive Features

Begonia soli-mutata is prized for its dark green, heavily bullate foliage with a lighter green center pattern and reddish edging or undersides that add even more depth to the leaf surface. The leaves have a raised, blistered texture that creates a dramatic sculptural effect and gives the plant a richer look than smoother-leaved species. It develops as a shrub-like to upright begonia with a full, leafy habit rather than a flat, strictly rhizomatous mound. Small white flowers may appear above the foliage, but the extraordinary leaf texture remains the defining feature.

Growing Conditions

  • Sun: Provide bright indirect light or filtered light, while protecting the plant from strong direct afternoon sun.
  • Soil: Grow in rich, airy, well-drained potting soil with organic matter and reliable drainage.
  • Water: Keep the soil evenly moist but not soggy, allowing the top layer to dry slightly between waterings.
  • Zones: Best grown outdoors in USDA Zones 10 to 11, and commonly grown as a houseplant elsewhere.
  • Habit: Expect an upright to bushy plant that commonly reaches about 12 to 24 inches tall and wide in containers, with larger size possible in ideal warm conditions.

Ideal Uses

  • Houseplant: Its textured foliage makes it a strong indoor accent for bright rooms, desks, and plant shelves.
  • Containers: Sun Changing Begonia performs beautifully in decorative pots where the leaf texture and color can be appreciated up close.
  • Shade Displays: Use it in protected outdoor containers and shaded patio plantings where bold foliage is needed without relying on flowers.
  • Collector Plant: This species is especially valuable in begonia collections where unusual foliage texture and color are a priority.
  • Focal Point: Sun Changing Begonia creates a dramatic focal point in a small container arrangement by anchoring the display with blistered dark foliage and contrasting green centers.

Low Maintenance Care

  • Watering: Water thoroughly when the top layer begins to dry, but do not allow the container to remain waterlogged.
  • Feeding: Apply a diluted balanced fertilizer during active growth to support healthy foliage and steady development.
  • Grooming: Remove damaged leaves and spent flowers to keep the plant neat and encourage fresh growth.
  • Humidity: Moderate to higher humidity helps maintain the best leaf quality and overall vigor.
  • Protection: Keep it away from frost, cold drafts, and prolonged dry air that can reduce foliage quality.

Why Choose Sun Changing Begonia?

  • Exceptional Texture: The raised, bullate leaves give this plant a sculptural look that stands out from smoother foliage plants.
  • Strong Color Contrast: Dark green leaves with lighter centers and reddish accents create a richer, more layered appearance.
  • Collector Appeal: Sun Changing Begonia is a memorable species begonia with a distinctive look that feels more unusual than standard houseplants.
  • Shade Friendly: It performs well in bright indoor light and protected shaded settings where many colorful plants struggle.
  • High Decorative Value: Even when flowers are secondary, the foliage keeps the plant attractive and useful throughout the year.

Sun Changing Begonia is a smart choice when you want a foliage plant that brings texture, contrast, and a stronger design presence into the space. Its unique leaf surface gives containers and indoor plantings a more curated, memorable feel from the moment it is placed. With bright filtered light, steady moisture, and good drainage, it becomes a dependable standout with lasting ornamental value.

Inkjets have come a long way
Pattern Name: Printer, Style: ET-15000
Just a lot to like about this printer and nothing I don't like. Very capable for the price. I do mostly black and white printing, rarely print photos. (This will supposedly do a credible job of photo printing too but I haven't tried it). If you want professional caliber photo printing, you probably want the Epson 8550 which is similar to this, a bit more expensive, but does 6 color printing. If you are doing more like every day business printing the 15000 might be a better choice because it's built more for speed. The tank system means I can just replace the black because I use it a lot. The black ink tank is double size of the others and based on my experience so far, I think I'll easily get over a thousand pages on the standard-vivid setting which is very strong black but still relatively high speed printing. Given that the black ink bottles are under $30 I think the cost per page will be comparable to laser. The booklet/pamphlet printing can be complicated to work out with layers of PDF software and the Epson printer driver. But once you work it through, it's super capable. I've printed a lot of 12 x 18 double-sided for booklets and the paper handling has been flawless. (It can duplex automatically for 8 1/2 x 11 but for other sizes you have to manually duplex, which you can do by printing back/front or even/odd.) It's not as fast as a laser printer but it's pretty fast -- inkjets have improved so much.

Perfect Printer for My Small Business
Pattern Name: Printer, Style: ET-15000
I purchased the Epson ET-15000 for my crafting and apparel business and have been very pleased with its performance. The print quality is excellent, colors are vibrant, and the large ink tanks help save money over time. It handles larger print sizes with ease and has become an essential part of my workspace.

Nice large format printer which is what I needed
Pattern Name: Printer, Style: ET-15000
I make stained glass panels and needed a printer that I could make larger copies with. I also wanted one that I could manipulate my images with. This was my best option and I love the Eco-Tank printers. After reading the reviews I made sure to add a couple years of additional warranty for my peace of mind. Finding 13 x 19 paper that was affordable was a tough challenge. I found a bunch on FB marketplace and bought everything they had to offer. This printer was very easy to set-up. I just followed the instructions and then followed what was on my computer screen. At first I thought I would have an issue connecting to Wi-Fi but when it failed on the computer, I was able to go to the printer and do it from the control panel - Easy peesey. I have used it several times since filling, charging, and installing and everything works as it should. My husband has an Eco-Tank printer and I've wanted one since he got his. I love that the ink will last a very long time and that it will be cost efficient. I am not overly interested in photo printing so this was the perfect choice for my needs. The print quality is fairly good when comparing it to my old Canon and e that there are several paper trays and ways to make copies, especially the automatic feed and the larger scanner bed.
