Butterfly Weed (Asclepias tuberosa) earns its name every summer when monarchs, swallowtails, and a parade of pollinators descend on its clusters of vivid orange flowers. This native milkweed species, sometimes called Orange Milkweed or Pleurisy Root, is one of the showiest wildflowers you can grow and one of the most important for supporting butterfly populations.

A Pollinator Powerhouse

Unlike its aggressive cousin Common Milkweed, Butterfly Weed stays in a tidy clump, reaching just 1-2 feet tall and wide. From early summer through late summer, flat-topped clusters of brilliant orange blooms create a landing pad for butterflies and serve as a critical nectar source. For monarch butterflies specifically, this plant is more than just a food source: it's a host plant where monarchs lay their eggs and caterpillars feed on the foliage as they develop.

Built for Tough Conditions

Butterfly Weed thrives where other perennials struggle. Its deep taproot, which can extend several feet into the soil, allows it to access moisture during droughts and survive in lean, rocky, or sandy soils. Once established after the first season, this plant requires virtually no maintenance. It tolerates heat, humidity, and neglect with equal grace. The trade-off for this toughness is patience: Butterfly Weed emerges late in spring, often weeks after other perennials have leafed out, and takes a full season to establish its root system before putting on its best show.

Landscape Uses

Plant Butterfly Weed in native gardens, prairie-style borders, rock gardens, or xeriscapes where its drought tolerance shines. The orange blooms combine beautifully with purple coneflowers, black-eyed Susans, and ornamental grasses. Mass plantings create a dramatic ribbon of color that draws pollinators from across the neighborhood. This plant also works in meadow plantings or naturalized areas where its self-seeding habit is welcome rather than a nuisance.

Four-Season Interest

Beyond the showy summer blooms, Butterfly Weed offers ornamental seed pods in fall that split open to release silky-tufted seeds. These pods add texture to the late-season garden and provide food for goldfinches and other seed-eating birds. The foliage may develop russet tones before dying back completely in winter. Leave the stems standing through winter for structural interest and cut back in early spring before new growth emerges.

Why This Plant Belongs in Your Garden

If you care about supporting pollinators, especially threatened monarch butterflies, Butterfly Weed is essential. It provides both nectar for adult butterflies and foliage for monarch caterpillars, making it a complete life-cycle plant. The fact that it requires zero fertilizer, minimal water after establishment, and no pest management makes it one of the easiest native perennials you can grow. Deer and rabbits leave it alone, and once that taproot is down, this plant will return reliably for decades.

I Wore These So Much I Almost Forgot I Owned Other Pants
Size: 48W x 32L, Color: Dark Rinse
I've been on a lifelong quest for the perfect pair of everyday jeans—durable enough for yard work, comfortable enough for a long car ride, and presentable enough to run errands without looking like I've given up on life. Having worn everything from high-end designer denim to discount store brands, I approached these Wrangler Authentics with a healthy dose of skepticism, especially given the price. I'm now a convert. I've had these jeans for about four months, and they've been my go-to for everything from building a shed to grabbing coffee. The relaxed fit is exactly what it promises: not baggy, but with plenty of room where it counts. The cotton fabric feels sturdy but not stiff, and they've held up to numerous washes without any noticeable pilling or significant color fade. They’re a workhorse of a garment, and for the price I paid, the value is simply unbeatable. I got a quality product that feels like it should cost twice as much. Pros: Exceptional Value: The quality far exceeds the price point. Comfortable & Relaxed Fit: Provides ample room for movement without looking sloppy. Durable Fabric: Holds up well to physical activity and repeated washing. Classic Style: A timeless look that works for almost any casual occasion. Cons: So Comfortable They're Addictive: They may cause you to neglect all other pairs of pants in your closet.

Honest value for money!
Size: 46W x 30L, Color: Black
I bought these pants (46 X 30 in black) figuring that they would probably be so-so like everything else that seems to be made for people that aren't "perfectly shaped." I'm VERY happy to report that I was wro...wroooo....um...less right than usual. ;-) (Obviously, I'm a guy.) Anyway, they fit well, feel quite comfortable, including plenty of room up front for sitting for too long, driving etc. No binding nor need to adjust. TMI? Nope...that's kinda important to us fellas. Perhaps I just happen to be the right sort of fat, but these jeans fit better than any other (Seriously! I'm 54 and this is really true!) pair of non-tailored pants that I've ever purchased. This includes purchases I've made in stores that I've tried on the item. These still fit better than those. Yep. That would be part of, "Any." I will be buying more and would encourage you to seriously consider these jeans. I don't work for them, they have never contacted me, except by sending what I ordered, nor am I in any way benefitting by writing a review. I don't usually write a review, but this actually moved me to want to speak up about a product/seller that shows what honest, ethical and attention to detail/customer needs and feedback. In closing, one must ask the obvious question after reading all of this. That question is: "Do penguins have knees?" Whilst you ponder that, just think about how good those jeans are going to look on you. A coupla days later they're going to look great in the window of the laundry machine (front load) at the laundromat and again when you put them in the dryer. Other people are just going to sob quietly about how icky their clothes look when compared to yours. Okay. The fact of the matter is that, yes, penguins do have knees. Now that you know that, I'm sure you'll rest much better and probably get better fuel mileage. Of course, that may not be true. I hope you've at least taken away from this little novel, that I'm very happy with the product and will absolutely be buying more in the near future. The rest of the silliness is just there to, hopefully, bring a little smile/sunshine into your day/night and I sincerely believe that it will be passed on from you to others, thus we can all spread a bit of happiness in a world that is in dire need of more love and less hate. ~peace to all
