The African Violet, known as Saintpaulia ionantha, is one of the most beloved and widely grown indoor flowering plants across the world, cherished for its compact size, long-lasting blooms, and ease of care. Known for brightening up windowsills and tabletops, this plant is ideal for both beginners and avid plant lovers alike. Its ability to flower year-round under proper conditions makes it a rewarding addition to any indoor garden.

Native to the cloud forests of Tanzania and Kenya, the long-lasting blooms of the African Violets come in a variety of colors such as burgundy, purple, pink, and white.

African Violets are compact perennials with fuzzy, dark green, oval leaves that form a dense, symmetrical rosette.

The soft, velvety texture of the foliage gives the plant an appealing tactile quality.

The leaves not only store water but also help the plant adapt to lower light conditions, making it one of the best flowering plants for indoor environments.

At maturity, most African Violets remain small, can grow up to 12 inches tall and 12 inches wide, depending on the variety.

This manageable size makes them suitable for small spaces, windowsills, shelves, and decorative containers. Miniature varieties are even smaller, while trailing or larger hybrid cultivars can grow slightly wider.

How to keep your African Violets Blooming All year round

African violets can bloom year-round when provided with consistent light, warmth, moisture, and feeding. These vibrant houseplants naturally cycle through blooming every 6–8 weeks, but with the right indoor care, you can encourage nearly constant flowering throughout the year.

To keep them blooming, provide 12–14 hours of bright, indirect light daily—supplement with LED or fluorescent grow lights if needed. Maintain indoor temperatures between 65°F and 75°F, and avoid drafts or dry air. Water from the bottom with room-temperature, filtered or dechlorinated water, keeping the soil evenly moist but never soggy. Avoid getting water on the leaves to prevent spotting.

Feed regularly with a diluted, high-phosphorus fertilizer once a year in spring and remove faded blooms to redirect energy. Repot annually using well-draining African violet soil, and keep humidity around 40–50% to support bud formation. With this steady care, your African violets can reward you with continuous, vibrant flowers all year long.

When and How to Water Your African Violet Plant

African Violets are not true succulents and appreciate evenly moist, not soggy soil. Letting them dry out too long can stunt flowering, but overwatering can cause root rot. Always avoid splashing water on the fuzzy leaves to prevent leaf spots and rot. African Violets are mildly drought-tolerant but should be watered thoroughly every 5–7 days during the growing season and every 10–14 days during the dormant season.

From spring through summer, during the growing season, water your African Violet every 5 to 7 days with about 1/4 to 1/2 cup of water, depending on pot size, making sure the top inch of soil has dried out before rewatering. This is when the plant is actively producing blooms and needs steady moisture. Bottom watering works best; place the pot in a tray with water for about 20 minutes, then remove it. This ensures roots absorb moisture without wetting the leaves.

From fall through winter, in the dormant season, water less frequently, about every 10 to 14 days, and use around 1/4 cup or less. The plant’s growth slows, and overwatering becomes more dangerous during this time. Let the soil dry a bit deeper than usual before watering. Keep humidity levels steady to prevent the leaves from wilting in dry indoor air.

Light Requirements – Where to Place Your African Violet Plant

When grown indoors, the African Violets thrive near bright, filtered light and should receive about 10–12 hours of indirect light per day. A north or east-facing window is ideal, or you can use fluorescent grow lights placed 12–15 inches above the plant. Avoid harsh, direct sunlight, which can scorch the velvety foliage.

For outdoor cultivation, the African Violets can be placed in shaded patios or under tree canopies where they receive bright but filtered light for 6–8 hours daily. Outdoor growing is only suitable in warm climates and should mimic their native, humid environment. Never expose them to the full sun or intense heat, as it will cause rapid dehydration and leaf damage.

Artificial lighting works very well, especially in low-light homes. Use fluorescent or LED lights for 12–14 hours per day. Keep them on a timer to simulate natural daylight and rotate the pot regularly to encourage even growth and flowering.

Optimal Soil & Fertilizer Needs

The African violet plants need light, well-draining soil rich in organic matter with a slightly acidic pH of 6.0–6.5, and should be fertilized once a year. A mix designed for African Violets, or one made from peat moss, perlite, and vermiculite, is best. Avoid compact soils, which prevent root oxygenation. Instead, make or buy a well-draining potting mix, or ideally use our specialized potting mix, opens in a new tab that contains 5 natural substrates and mycorrhizae to promote the development of a strong root system that helps your plant to thrive.

Fertilize your African Violet once a year in spring during its active growing season with a balanced water-soluble NPK fertilizer. Use one high in phosphorus (like 5-10-5) to promote flowering. Avoid fertilizing dry soil to prevent root burning.

Do not fertilize during winter unless the plant is actively growing indoors under lights. Over-fertilization in the dormant season can lead to salt buildup and root damage. Flush the soil occasionally with water to prevent salt accumulation.

Indoor African Violet Growing Requirements

When grown indoors, African Violets thrive in stable temperatures between 65–75°F with 50–60% humidity, bright indirect light, and protection from cold drafts or direct heat. This makes them ideal houseplants for year-round enjoyment. For best results, place them near an east- or north-facing window where they can receive gentle, filtered sunlight for about 10–12 hours a day. If natural light is limited, they also respond well to fluorescent or LED grow lights. Keep them away from drafty windows, heating vents, or air conditioners, as sudden temperature changes can stress the plant and reduce flowering. Use a humidity tray or small room humidifier if indoor air is particularly dry, especially in winter.

Hardiness Zones & More

In the United States, this is mostly an indoor plant, but if you live in southern Florida or Hawaii, then you can cultivate it outdoors in USDA zones 11-12.

Even in these zones, they should be planted in shaded areas that protect them from direct sunlight, which can scorch their soft, fuzzy leaves.

Because they are sensitive to temperatures below 60°F, it’s best to grow them in containers that can be brought indoors during unexpected cool spells.

Outdoor humidity should be consistently high to prevent leaf dehydration, and they should never be exposed to wind or sudden temperature shifts.

Wildlife African Violet Flowers Attract the Following Friendly Pollinators

The African Violet flowers can attract small indoor pollinators like fungus gnats or fruit flies, but are not known for being major pollinator magnets like outdoor blooms. They are mostly grown indoors for ornamental purposes and rarely attract outdoor wildlife.

According to the ASPCA, African Violets are non-toxic to humans, cats, dogs, and other household pets, making them an excellent and safe choice for homes with animals. Their safety, combined with compact growth, makes them popular for windowsills and tabletops.

How to propagate African Violet

African Violets are easily propagated from leaf cuttings, making them a favorite among beginner and advanced growers alike. Choose a healthy, mature leaf and snip it with about 1 inch of stem. Let it callus for a few hours, then place it in moist, light soil or water. In 3–4 weeks, tiny plantlets will begin forming at the base. Once they develop roots and 3–4 small leaves, they can be separated and potted individually.

Key Takeaways

  1. African Violets are one of the most popular indoor flowering plants worldwide, admired for their compact size and ability to bloom multiple times a year under the right conditions.

If you actually understand how to use it, it's amazing.
Size: 4 Fl Oz
My skin type: - Very Dry, easily dehydrated - Oily nose - Prone to stubborn acne and closed comedones - Redness on chin and cheeks (not rosacea) I already use a nightly Tretinoin cream (.04% concentration) to help with my acne and premature signs of aging but decided with my derm that incorporating a BHA would be a good idea to help with my seriously stubborn closed comedones and some irritating textural issues. It was between this and the Cerave SA lotion and I ultimately decided on this due to the higher concentration of salicylic acid. It's moisturizing, and feels sticky for the first 5-10 minutes after application but seems to sinks in to something of a satin finish on me and I can no longer feel it on my skin. You just have to be a little patient. My skin feels well hydrated and plump after it settles and looks really smooth and my pores aren't as obvious. It sits just fine under makeup for me but I'm not a new user to chemical exfoliants so I don't have lots of dead skin pilling up or sloughing off when I use it, my skin is, for the most part, already very smooth outside the acne and CCs. Occasionally I'll apply it further down my neck/decolletage than usual and WOW do I old skin just ball up and peel right away - it's so gross but also satisfying. So those that don't exfoliate often or are new to BHA/AHAs will likely have issues with foundation until their skin adjusts (but it will adjust). My advice in those cases is to either use this at night for the first few weeks or just accept going barefaced for a little while if you can. I'd strongly suggest not applying this product over anything that you feel does not dry down fully, the times I've attempted to use it after serums or heavier products it takes forever to sink in and sometimes never fully does. I save all my serums and essences for after this has absorbed and it's far easier to work with it as a result. My steps go like this most days: ACWell Licorice toner --- PC 2% BHA --- 10% Niacinamide serum --- TO Matryxil serum --- Secret Key Black Snail cream or Syn-ake cream w/ 3 drops Stratia Fortify oil --- Sunscreen. It works fairly quickly IMO, on my neck where I typically don't apply my Tret at night I noticed the peeling and balling of dead skin on day one and on my face where I have a patch of really awful CCs I noticed them getting smaller and smoother by around day 3-4. I'm going on about 8 days now and they're barely visible unless I'm right up in the mirror and feel as if they're almost gone when I touch my fingers to that area. I do have some slight peeling of the skin around my mouth and nose but it's not terrible (likely because I already exfoliate the heck out of my skin with the tret). Some tips and things keep in mind: 1) DO NOT RINSE IT OFF. I don't understand some of the top reviews advising people to do that, it says on the bottle not to rinse and nearly all chemical exfoliators are meant to be left on until the next cleansing specifically so they can do their job. If you rinse it off you're either going to prevent it from properly exfoliating or end up irritating the hell out of your skin. If you have oily skin and feel this might be heavy on you than you can probably just use this on bare skin and then sunscreen if you use in the AM or a lightweight lotion/cream and be done with it, but you need to leave it on your skin. 2) You have got to use sunscreen while you're using this product! Any BHA or AHA exfoliant causes increased sun sensitivity and you have to address that in your routine. You should already use sunscreen daily but it becomes a must when you incorporate a chemical exfoliator or you risk sun damage. 3) Less is more! Don't slop this on your face or soak a cotton pad in it, a little goes a long way and you'll be kicking yourself if you apply way too much and have to wait 20+ minutes for it to sink in. Use a shake or two and add more if needed but go easy. 4) Expect some irritation initially. Chemical exfoliants can be harsh and rough even on sturdy skin and you have to give yourself time to adjust. Over-exfoliation is a possibility but sometimes just introducing a BHA or AHA into your routine can cause some sensitivity. Don't panic and just be gentle to your skin. Use ceramides (like Cerave Skin Renewing cream) or fatty oils to soothe your face if needed and try to stay away from any harsh products or acids like Vitamin C right after applying this to avoid really burning your face.

Good, but cheap and messy dispersal of product
Size: 4 Fl Oz
This stuff works great. However, the packaging is not. It is messy and you lose product whenever you dispense it. For the price, I don’t want to waste a drop, but product ends up around the top and it makes this messy. Will I continue to purchase? Yes. But only because I have tried other BHAs and they seem a bit harsher on my very delicate skin. I am in the process of trying other brands that have better packaging and once I do, I will not replace. Already, I have found a budget vitamin C that has the same percentage of actives as PC- and a much, much better dispenser. PC sold out a while ago and the brand has just not been impressing me lately. Still, this BHA works well, is non irritating on my fair, delicate, over 50 skin. I just wish the bottle had a stopper that helped it dispense the product in a more controlled manner.

WORTH THE HYPE!
Size: 4 Fl Oz
I’ve been using the Paula’s Choice 2% BHA Liquid Exfoliant for a couple of months now, and I can honestly understand why this product has such a loyal following. I mainly bought it to help with the appearance of my pores and blackheads, and I’ve definitely noticed a visible difference since adding it into my routine. When I first started using it, I did notice a slight tingly feeling on my skin. It didn’t hurt or cause any actual irritation, but it definitely startled me a little at first 😭 Thankfully, it never turned into redness, burning, or discomfort, and my skin adjusted pretty quickly after the first few uses. I currently use it around 3–4 times a week… or at least I try to, when I remember. Even with me not being perfectly consistent, I’ve still noticed that my pores look smaller and cleaner overall, especially around my nose where I tend to get the most blackheads. My skin texture also feels smoother, and my face just looks a little clearer and more refined in general. I also appreciate that it’s fragrance-free because my skin can be pretty sensitive at times. The formula feels lightweight and easy to apply, and it layers well with the rest of my skincare products without feeling greasy or heavy. One thing I’d recommend is easing into it slowly if you’re new to chemical exfoliants, especially if you have sensitive skin. Starting with 1-2 uses a week worked really well for me. Overall, I’m really happy with this product and definitely plan on continuing to use it. If enlarged pores or stubborn blackheads are something you struggle with, this is genuinely worth trying.

Noticeable improvement in skin tone and texture after consistent use. Love this product!
Size: 4 Fl Oz
I have been using this product for almost two months now. It is easy to apply, feels nice, I but was unsure about adding it to my long term skin routine. Now, after two months, the noticeable changes and clearing in my blemishes, sun spots and pores has convinced me it will be on the regular, long term routine. I use it twice a day and have no problems with dryness at all. And to be honest, I don't think it took that long for the changes to appear but they were subtle and I just started noticing my make up went on better and my skin had a "glow" it didn't have before. I noticed some reviews commenting on the price but I find it to be extremely reasonably priced for the size and even after two months, I have plenty left to last another two months.

Game changer for clearer skin
Size: 1 Fl Oz
I’ve been using this consistently and it has really helped improve my skin texture and keep pores clearer over time. The formula feels lightweight like a liquid toner and absorbs quickly without leaving any sticky residue. The quality feels very high and well formulated, especially with the salicylic acid working deep in the pores to help with congestion and breakouts. It also feels gentle when used correctly, and I haven’t experienced irritation. In terms of value for money, a little goes a long way so the bottle lasts a long time even with regular use, which makes it worth the price. The fit into my routine is easy since it layers well with other skincare products, and the overall appearance of my skin looks smoother and more even with continued use. Overall, great quality, effective ingredients, good value for money, and a staple in my skincare routine.
