Poinsettia, Christmas Flower (Any Color) - Plant

The Poinsettia, known scientifically as Euphorbia pulcherrima, is a vibrant and festive plant that has become synonymous with the holiday season. With its striking bracts that come in a variety of colors, including red, white, pink, and marbled varieties, this plant adds a touch of cheer to any home. Originating from Mexico, the Poinsettia has a rich history and is celebrated for its beauty and cultural significance during Christmas.

What makes the Poinsettia special is its association with Christmas traditions and its stunning visual appeal. The plant symbolizes goodwill and cheer, making it a perfect gift during the holiday season. Its unique star-shaped leaves and colorful bracts are not only eye-catching but also serve as a reminder of the beauty of nature during winter.

One of the special features of the Poinsettia is its ability to thrive indoors, making it an ideal houseplant during the colder months. With proper care, these plants can last well beyond the holiday season, providing joy and color throughout the winter.

Growing Instructions:

  • Choose a well-draining potting mix.
  • Plant in a pot with drainage holes to prevent root rot.
  • Place in a location with bright, indirect sunlight.
  • Maintain a temperature between 65°F to 70°F (18°C to 21°C).

Care Instructions:

  • Water when the top inch of soil feels dry.
  • Avoid overwatering; ensure proper drainage.
  • Fertilize every 4-6 weeks with a balanced fertilizer during the growing season.
  • Remove any dead leaves or bracts to encourage new growth.

Uses:

  • Perfect for holiday decorations and centerpieces.
  • Great as a thoughtful gift for friends and family.
  • Can be used in festive arrangements or wreaths.
  • Enhances indoor air quality by filtering toxins.

Fun Facts:

  • Poinsettias are native to Mexico and were first introduced to the U.S. by Joel Poinsett in the 1820s.
  • The colorful bracts are often mistaken for flowers; the actual flowers are small and yellow, located in the center of the bracts.
  • Poinsettias are not toxic to humans but can cause mild irritation if ingested by pets.
  • They are one of the most popular potted plants in the U.S., with millions sold each year during the holiday season.

Environmental Impact:

Poinsettias are grown in greenhouses, which can have a significant environmental impact. However, many growers are adopting sustainable practices, such as using organic fertilizers and reducing water usage, to minimize their ecological footprint. By choosing locally sourced Poinsettias, you can support sustainable agriculture and reduce transportation emissions.

Great photo essay, history of aviation and space
i'm an engineer- worked rocket motors, and various satellite programs. this book was recommended by associate after visiting the museum at Langley. The pics are super, with short descriptions, and moderate on the tech. It's an amazing pulse of this wild history, and mostly is from America's lineage. St. Louis, Mercury, Atlas, and up to current Shuttle. There's also the SST, and unique turn of the century early birds. A fine read to be shared with a youngster (my son 10, digs it), or for the history or engineering buff. amazon has it cheaper than at the museum.

Essential reading for PowerPoint presenters.
Format: Paperback, Format: Paperback
Cliff shows details how to improve our PowerPoint presentations. He gives concrete and simple steps to transform a message into a targeted presentation. All of us have suffered from presenters who went over their allotted time because they had vital information to give us, yet we still didn't know their main point. Many have seen slide decks burdened with dozens of bullet points. Did the volume of points yield more clarity or did they dull our ability to focus on the message? Probably not. Read Cliff's book. Follow his method and you'll be a more effective presenter.

Useful with some scientific corroboration
Format: Paperback
Worth it as a primer to slide content and how it inter-relates to the delivery when giving a presentation. Very slightly laboured, like most TV documentaries nowadays - you feel they could move a bit faster (...yeah we got it the first time).

Simple and streamlined to meet anyone's needs
Format: Paperback
This book rocks! It provide a simple and structured way to define, develop and deliver a "Kick Ass" presentation that you can project or just use from the podium. It bring the audio and visual together to compliment a story to be shared. It has taken the hassel factor out of designing a presentation for anyone on any subject. Thank you!

Lasting value but degraded presentation
Format: Paperback
I've been a BBP fan since the first edition in 2005. The second edition in 2007 was a significant update and refinement. The latest, 2011 edition, is not worth buying if you already have the second edition -- the information is essentially the same but the 2011 is printed on cheap paper and the contrast between text and background for most of the illustrations is lousy, e.g. black text on a dark grey background, white text on a light grey background. I found it very difficult to read. The online version (O'Reilly Safari Books OnLine) is slightly better because it allows you to magnify the low contrast images which makes them slightly more legible. Thankfully, access to the online version is included with the ink-on-paper book free via a scratch-off, lottery ticket-type insert at the back of the book. If I had to do it again, I'd skip the paper book from Amazon and just purchase electronic access via O'Reilly. This version is more legible and you can print important pages that you might want hard copies of to highlight, mark-up, etc.
