Get Tropical Vibes Even in Cold Weather With the Windmill Palm Tree!

Say hello to the Chinese Windmill Palm Tree! Trachycarpus fortunei is the solution to adding a touch of paradise to your landscape no matter how far north you live!

The small Windmill Palm tree is one of the most cold-tolerant palm tree cultivars available and we have even seen it grown as far north as Tennessee and Virginia and the Pacific Northwest. This species of windmill fan palm, sometimes called the Chusan Palm from Chusan Island where Robert Fortune first saw cultivated specimens.

The Windmill Palm features lush, green fronds that fan out from its branches with oblong leaves. It may lose its dark green color in cold weather.

Perfect for planting around your pool and can be grown in a variety of locations. While it has no edible fruit, it does flower and bloom.

This windmill tree produces yellow bushy, cascading flowers on both male and female flowering plants. These yellow flowers appear higher up the trunk of the ornamental tree near the hairy black fibers from old leaf sheaths on growing palm trees.

Best known for its pest and disease resistance, slow growth rate, and cold temperature tolerance. One of the hardiest palm trees out there! It even received the prestigious award of garden merit from the Royal Horticulture Society in the UK.

How Fast Does a Windmill Palm Grow?

Windmill Palm's growth rate is less than 8 inches per year or possibly anywhere from 2 to 3 feet if grown in their preferred conditions.

Where is the best place to consider planting a Windmill Palm tree?

Plant this cold hardy palm tree in a location where it can grow strong shallow root systems. It is very easy to grow and the fan-shaped, dark green foliage brings an instant tropical vibe to any landscape, even colder climates.

Choose a planting location that offers adequate sunlight and shade in a low-traffic area. Allow proper clearance for the mature growth size. Well-drained soil is ideal. Water regularly for the first planted year to ensure adequate water is available for establishing a strong root system. Prune as necessary to remove any damaged or dead foliage and to promote a well-balanced structure.

The best time to plant is in early spring or fall! You can use Perfect Plants Palm Fertilizer (which is the best fertilizer for Windmill Palm trees) to enrich the soil for this tropical palm tree plant.  This is a slow-release fertilizer that should be applied every 3 months during the spring and summer growing seasons.

How Tall Do Windmill Palms Get?

A Windmill Palm can grow to an average of 10 to 40 feet tall in maturity. The Windmill Palm height is most commonly seen around 10-15 feet tall and 6-10 feet wide.

Right tool for the money
Style: Lawn Edger w/(1) 4.0 Ah Battery
Very impressed with this WORX Cordless Lawn Edger. My driveway have never been edged in over 30 years, this edger handled the job with ease, made a pass at one inch and then two inches. My driveway is 80 feet long, after the two passes I was left with one bar of battery power, great tool for the price. I would definitely recommend this product to any home owner that maintains their own yard.

Cute little bug that does its job. Good value.
Size: 17" (2 x 4.0Ah)
Not bad for the price. Pretty easy to set up (only user stupidity gave me any issues). Worked well for my first cut. Lasted about 32 minutes. I'm gonna give the batteries a more significant charge and try again, though I did charge for over 12 hours and the lights were solid green. So not sure what's going on there. I don't understand how "user technique" applies here, though I did hit a lot of hidden sticks. Could have burned through more energy? Idk. But it did handle those sticks like a champ! I made sure to get all the big ones out of the way, but there were some small ones and it just ran em right over good as any gas mower. I would probably play pickup sticks a little longer beforehand next time, but I was a little pressed for energy today. Anyways, irrespective of the actual function of the machine, I prefer this dramatically over either wider or self-propelled models. Self-propulsion can be very annoying when trying to get around difficult terrain or obstacles. I also enjoy the exercise! The small form factor is very nice again for obstacles or weaving between objects. It also is nice and light and easy to push. After 30+ minutes of mowing I'm not even remotely sore. I also enjoyed just getting to smell the fresh cut grass rather than belching gas smoke! I'm looking forward to low maintenance on this lil guy. The blades seem pretty well made, and I will be keeping an eye on them for wear and tear. I had a nice day outside in perfect weather with this little bug, and can recommend it if you're specifically looking for a smaller mower that lasts 30-40 mins on a charge and can deal with a push mower.

Powerful, easy to use, and perfect for small yards.
Size: 17" (2 x 4.0Ah)
I was pleasantly surprised at just how well this mower cuts and handles! Years ago I bought a Greenworks electric mower and loved it, but it was a pain trying to pull the cord around. When I happened upon this mower, I thought I'd give it a try and am so glad I did! The box is heavy, but this 63 year old woman managed to get it inside the garage and out of the box. The handle is simple to install, as is the grass catcher. The height adjustment mechanism is one of the easiest I've ever used. Once the batteries were fully charged, (they do take a few hours), I had my small front yard mowed in less than fifteen minutes. It isn't as quiet as an electric, but it's not as loud as a gas powered and there are NO fumes. I used the grass catcher and when I emptied it I found that the grass mulched was almost like saw dust! I hope this machine lasts a long time!

Good little mower but not perfect
Size: 17" (2 x 4.0Ah), Size: 17" (2 x 4.0Ah)
Decent little mower. Purchased it so I could take the sketchyness out of my front yard using my rider with the slope I have. Did a good job cutting the grass and is super quiet and very light weight. I've added some pictures of the handle extended and folded down next to my other tools for some size comparison as well. Stores well too. Grey button circled is how you adjust the deck height. Press and lift or push while holding the button down until you get your desired height and release. Super easy. Battery life is ok. I wouldn't be able to do my entire yard front and back on one charge. Batteries were almost dead after what felt like 25 minutes of use but my grass is rather thick so theres that. It did what I wanted it to do on one charge so I'm happy although it won't do a full yard front and back. You would need an extra set of batteries for that. Little assembly required. You have to put the grab bar on and install the mulch plug or bag yourself and charge the batteries before use and you're good to go. Not a super strong mower but thats to be expected at the price point. Strong enough to get the job done though. Some of the thicker parts I had to do two passes to get a good cut and it stalled out on me once. Thats ok though because I have the mulch plug installed and mulching boggs down any mower. 4 stars because there isn't a good carry handle to use when it is folded up that I could find. You kind of have to manhandle the thing into where you want once its folded up. Opened the box when it got delivered to find the batteries and charger just tossed in by the factory. Was a bit frustrated seeing that stuff just banging around in the box. Pros Quiet, light weight, stores great decently strong Cons No go handle when folded up, packaging Would I recommend? Yes. Good cheap alternative if you have a very small yard or are needing something to edge with or need to get to a hard spot that a rider is not the best for. Plus you don't have to worry about a cheap gas mower blowing your arm out with 10 minutes of pull starting.
