Dahlia variabilis 'Pompone Double Mixed' Pompone Dahlia 'Double Mixed'

Small but perfectly formed ball-shaped flowers in fully double form, in a wide band of vintage cottage shades — the geometrically precise pompone form on tall 90–120cm stems, bringing height, structure and proper old-world charm to the late-summer border and ready-made vintage character to any bouquet.

The pompone dahlia is the geometrically perfect cousin in the dahlia family — small (typically 5–7cm), tightly-packed double balls with hundreds of curled petals arranged into compact spheres of pure colour. Where decorative dahlias are flamboyant and cactus dahlias are spiky, pompones are quietly precise — and they have a particular cottage-garden charm that's distinctly different from showier dahlia forms. The mix produces flowers in a wide range of vintage cottage shades — soft pinks, deep ruby reds, bright yellows, oranges and creamy whites — on tall 90–120cm plants with strong stems that hold the geometric heads beautifully. Half-hardy perennial typically grown as an annual from seed. Flowers from July to first autumn frosts. Excellent cutting flower with proper vintage character.

A note on growing

Pompone dahlias from seed can be slightly trickier than other dahlia types: some seed batches need a period of winter chilling (cold stratification) before they germinate, while others come up reliably in spring. To maximise germination success, sow indoors from February to April — surface-sow onto moist seed compost and cover with a fine layer of vermiculite. Maintain 15–20°C; germination is variable, typically 10–28 days. If seeds fail to emerge within a month, place the tray in the fridge for 2 weeks then return to warmth — this cold-stratification trick often triggers the next wave of germination.

Plant out only after all risk of frost has passed (late May or June) in full sun and deep, rich, fertile soil. Dahlias are hungry plants — dig in plenty of organic matter and feed weekly with potash-rich (tomato) fertiliser once buds form. Space 50cm apart. Pinch out the top growing tip at 15cm for bushy multi-stemmed growth. At the end of the season, tubers can be lifted after the first frost and stored frost-free for replanting.

Where it shines

At the back of cottage borders where the 90–120cm height provides structure and the small precise pompone heads read as vintage cottage character. In the cutting garden as a properly old-fashioned cut flower — pompone dahlias bring genuine vintage authenticity to bouquets that larger modern dahlia forms can't match. In rustic wedding flowers, where the small ball-shaped heads work beautifully in mixed cottage-style arrangements. As a structural late-summer plant when many other border plants are winding down.

Plant alongside

For a vintage cottage cutting scheme, combine pompone dahlias with Cornflower 'Black & Mauve Mix' (vintage palette match), the dusty smoky pink of Cynoglossum 'Mystery Rose', and the airy white lace of Ammi majus. For warm-tone harmony in borders, pair with Cosmos 'Apricotta' and Calendula 'Touch of Red'.

I like this better than my name brand unit
🔵 Features: The water pick boasts a generously sized reservoir, which is a standout feature. It also comes with a convenient USB charger, offers 3 speed settings (normal, soft, and pulse), and features quick and easy detachable heads. 🔵 Power: In terms of power, comparing it to my current unit revealed no noticeable differences in pressure or volume to the naked eye. Both units effortlessly deliver a stream of water up to 12 feet. 🔵 Heads: The water pick includes a plethora of heads, more than most people would likely need. Personally, I would have preferred a lifetime supply of the simple angled head picks, but the variety provided caters to all preferences. 🔵 Overall: After using it for a few days, I found that it performs admirably. When placed side by side with my old unit, I consistently reach for the 7AM2M unit, primarily due to its larger reservoir. In all other aspects, I find them comparable, and I wholeheartedly recommend this water pick to others.

Well designed portable water flosser that's holding up so far
There are a number of such portable water flossers on Amazon, but this is one of the better ones IMO. The water pressure is adequate, with enough settings to allow you to ramp up (or keep using on a lower setting if desired). One nice feature is that the tank detaches easily and this makes filling under a tap easier than other units which don't have an easily detached tank. The tank shape is also a bit fatter so it's not too long along any one dimension. The tank capacity of 300 ml is adequate for a single use. The standard suite of flosser heads are included - flossing itself, peridontal, and one for braces. The tongue cleaner attachment is also there but I prefer to use a separate tongue cleaner tool. Charging is via USB-C and while the port isn't super water proof, there's no damage to the unit yet. Battery life is typical at about 20-30 days with twice a day usage.

Quit working in a month
Bought one. It quit working. They sent another… it never worked right before finally dying on me the same way. Looks like it’s not even an available product anymore. But if it ever does come back.. don’t buy it.

Not what I expected!
I have never used a dental flosser before, and it showed by the mess I made haha. I can say, this isn't for me, but I can see the appeal. It is relatively lightweight and comes with a lot of different attachments. Loading it up with water is easy and doesn't take much effort. I would call this portable, even though it is a little big. I can only stand the "soft mode". If I choose any other, my mouth is overwhelmed. Overall, I would definitely recommend this if you have experience with dental flossers. It was hard to use at first but you get the hang of it.

Reasonable cost dental device (updated review)
I used this device for a few months to provide an accurate review. First off, it works. Fill the bottom end section with water, snap in a tip, switch on and go. Easy to use, and the instruction set is short and simple, the result of a thoughtful adoption process. Very reasonable cost. Several heads are provided for you to select. And there are three settings to use: soft, normal and pulse. I did not find any benefit to the pulse setting as it seemed to cycle the water pressure lower than to normal repeatedly. Several additional items worth mentioning: 1) The water pressure is modest. the lower pressure is made up for in more water delivery. 2) This device consumes water at a rapid pace. What this means is that you will need to either swallow or spill the water out of the side of your mouth at least twice during the 90 second cycle - while the unit is operating. Switch off during the cycle restarts the countdown. Water will accumulate rapidly in your mouth. You need to spill the accumulated water in your mouth with the unit on. If you remove it from your mouth you will have a mess around you. 3) The on-off switch is located on the handle toward the top. You will need to learn to not place your finger over the switch which abruptly shuts the device off. Conversely, if you like to swith off the device during the cycle to neatly spill accumulated water out of your mouth, you may find yourself attempting to find the switch push button without a tactile means of feeling for it. 4) The charge port has a small flexible grommet covering it, which might take a little while to find where it is located. 5) **This is my update from my original posting**: the duration of charge shortened over the last several weeks to the point where with the unit switched on, the lights are on, but the pump no longer works, meaning it died and has been trashed.
