Sunflower - Birds & Bees (Heirloom) - Helianthus annuus

Annual - Enhance your garden's eco-system with these sturdy, 6 - 8' tall sunflowers whose golden-yellow petals and chocolate centers seem to literally follow the sun. During blooming season they offer a rich pollen and nectar source for foraging honey bees, native bees and any other garden pollinators. At maturity, these black seeded sunflowers provide particularly oil-rich kernels with somewhat softer shells than others, yielding an abundance of nutritious feasts for birds.

Soil & Water:Make several sowings several weeks apart to have a succession of flowers in full bloom. Keep soil moist and well-weeded and protect very young seedlings from birds with netting or plastic berry baskets, removing before plants get crowded. Prefer good garden soil.Amend soil with a slow release fertilizer if soil is poor - not too high in nitrogen or flowers will be sparse.Once established, plants are somewhat drought tolerant./p>

Planting & Growing: To Plant Outdoors: Plant in full sun when weather is warm and settled both day and night and all danger of frost has passed. Poke seeds into well-worked soil about 1" deep, 4 - 5" apart. Press soil firmly over seeds and keep moist until seedlings emerge in 8 - 10 days. Thin to 12 - 15" apart when seedlings are large enough to handle. To Start Indoors: Several weeks before the last frost date, sow seeds 1" deep in individual pots of well-drained seed starting mix. Keep moist and provide a strong light source until ready to plant outside when seedlings are large enough to handle. When weather has warmed into the 50°F range, transplant 12" apart in full sun, disturbing the roots as little as possible.

Harvesting & Storage:As flowers bloom, bees pollinate the florets in each head and the seeds begin to mature. When the center disc florets have dried up, birds of all sorts will visit to snack on the ripening seed heads. To harvest fo feeding birds in the fall and winter, cover heads with paper bags till ripened kernels are plump and hard-shelled, then cut entire heads, let them fully dry and remove the seeds by hand or by rubbing over a wire screen into a basket. Store in closed containers to feed as needed.

Soil Temperature: above 50°F
Planting Depth: 1"
Germination: 8-10 Days
Height At Maturity: 6-7 feet
Sun/Shade: Full Sun
Spacing After Thinning: 12"

Color: Green
This quit working exactly 31 days after delivery. Since the day of delivery counted as day 1, I am out of luck on my purchase.

Mixed results using this auto can opener...
Color: Green
I had high hopes for this can opener, but was let down. This can opener failed me half of the times I tried to use it. For some reason it wouldn't cut through the paper surrounding the cans. I tried it on small, medium and large cans. It worked best on larger cans. I got it because I liked the idea of opening cans without having to contend with the sharp lids that inevitably fall back into the opened cans. It is unsanitary at best and a safety hazard at worst. On the plus side it is rechargeable, so no battery worries there. It fits nicely in the hand for ease of use. It appears to be of sturdy construction, so it's a high quality item. And being small it will store easily. The price is right and it represents a good value for your hard earned dollars.

Hands Free Operation; Safe Cutting
Color: Green
I used to have a manual (as in turn-the-crank) side-cutting can opener really liked it. It eventually wore out and I had relegated myself to the standard hand-crank top-cut version that often left a sharp lid and sometimes a little burr or sharp point where the cut wasn't complete and the you had to the tear/bend the lid off. With this mostly hands-free Side Cut Can Opener, sharp edges will be few, if any. I say "mostly hands-free" because you do have to position the opener on the can and push the button to start it and, when it finishes, you have to push the button again to tell it to stop. On the demo can in my video, the lip was such that the cut was right through that edge such that there were no sharp edges. It is possible that some cans may be designed such that the cutter falls below that rim and cuts the can edge in a way that leaves dull lid but a sharp can. These should be rare, but good to watch out for in case you get one. Always assume edges are sharp until you verify otherwise. You'll note in my video that the lid was a little difficult to remove. Some of that may be learning curve with this new opener, and some it may be that is just how it is! I accept that and choose to move forward using this new, safer can opener. Recommended.

Very dangerous metal shavings!!!
Negative stars if I could. This is a very dangerous product. It worked well for a while. But then it quit effectively removing the lid instead I got little tiny shavings of metal around the edge. These shavings of metal go into the food and very dangerous. So this was a waste of money and incredibly dangerous. I am throwing it in the trash today.
