Add to touch of elegance to your pond landscape with the Spider Lily Plant. While its common name does not properly convey its beauty, the Spider Lily Plant is a lovely ornamental pond plant with elegant foliage and fragrant blossoms. Native to the southern United States, the Spider Lily Plant produces long, deeply grooved strap-like leaves that grow up to 24" or more in length. The upright growth habit of its leaves gives the Spider Lily Plants a fantastic architectural presence.
The Spider Lily Plant produces rigid floral stalks from early spring into summer that elevate and showcase a cluster of large white flowers. The elongated, tendril-like outer petals of the Spider Lily gives it a spidery appearance and is the source of its common name. Each floral stalk may produce upwards to 10 flowers for a sensational floral presentation.
Though tropical in nature, the Spider Lily Plant tolerates a wide variety of lighting conditions and can thrive in partial shade or sunny conditions. The Spider Lily Plant is a moisture-loving plant that can be located at the water's edge or immersed in water. The Spider Lily Plant is a heavy feeder and will benefit from regular fertilization. The Spider Lily may reach up to 24" high with a spread of about 12" or more depending upon where you live. Dense patches of the Spider Lily Plant can be employed to help control pond shoreline erosion if planted in moist marshy conditions, where it can form a colony with its runners. To maintain a neat appearance or to contain excess growth, pot the Spider Lily Plant in a 2-gallon planting container and set the planter in your pond or water garden with about 2 to 6 inches of water over the crown. In northern zones, winter indoors as a houseplant. Zones 7-11.
