It grows from a corm and produces vibrant, goblet-shaped flowers in shades of pink to purple, often emerging without any accompanying foliage. The strap-like green leaves appear in spring and die back in early summer, leaving the ground bare until the flowers emerge later in the year. Preferring well-drained soil and full sun to partial shade, it is ideal for naturalizing in meadows, woodland edges, or rock gardens. While beautiful, all parts of the plant are toxic if ingested, and it should be handled with care. Zones 4-9
Germination
Colchicum autumnale seeds require a period of cold stratification to break dormancy, as they naturally germinate in spring after experiencing winter conditions. Sow seeds in a well-draining seed mix, covering them lightly with soil, and keep the medium moist but not waterlogged. Place the container in a cool, shaded location outdoors to allow natural temperature fluctuations, or refrigerate the seeds for about 8–12 weeks before moving them to a warmer environment. Germination can be slow and erratic, sometimes taking several months to over a year, so patience is essential. Once seedlings emerge, provide bright, indirect light and grow them on until they are large enough to be transplanted, noting that it may take several years for plants to reach flowering size.
