Maggie Daley Chinese Astilbe (Astilbe chinensis 'Maggie Daley')

Maggie Daley Chinese Astilbe is a mid to late summer perennial valued for lavender-purple plumes, shiny dark green foliage, and strong shade-garden performance. Its dense, fuzzy flower spikes rise above a tidy clump and add cool-toned color after many earlier astilbes have finished blooming. The glossy, lacy foliage remains attractive through the growing season with steady moisture, giving the plant value before and after its flower display. With rich soil, part shade, and regular water, Maggie Daley Chinese Astilbe brings height, texture, and dependable late-season color to borders, containers, woodland gardens, foundations, and cut flower plantings.

Distinctive Features

Maggie Daley Chinese Astilbe produces bright lavender-purple to pink-lavender plumes that are dense, fuzzy, and long lasting in the garden. The flowers are held on upright stems above shiny dark green, deeply divided foliage that gives the plant a polished texture even when it is not blooming. Its bloom time is later than many early astilbe selections, making it valuable for extending color into midsummer and late summer. As a Chinese astilbe, it may tolerate brief dry spells better than many astilbes once established, but consistent moisture still produces the best foliage and flower quality.

Growing Conditions

  • Sun: Grows best in part shade to shade, with morning sun tolerated where soil stays consistently moist.
  • Soil: Prefers fertile, humusy, organically rich, moist, well-drained soil and can adapt to damp garden sites that do not stay stagnant.
  • Water: Keep soil evenly moist for best flowering, especially during summer heat or the first growing season.
  • USDA Zones: Hardy in USDA Zones 4 to 9, with some sources also listing performance from Zone 3 to 8 in colder regions.
  • Mature Size: Typically reaches 24 to 28 inches tall in bloom and 16 to 20 inches wide.
  • Habit: Forms an upright, clump-forming herbaceous perennial with sturdy flower stems above a neat foliage mound.
  • Foliage: Features shiny dark green, deeply divided, lacy foliage that remains attractive outside the bloom season.
  • Flower Color: Produces dense lavender-purple to pink-lavender plumes with a soft, fuzzy texture.
  • Bloom Season: Blooms from midsummer to late summer, often around July to August depending on climate.
  • Fruit: Not grown for ornamental fruit, though dried plumes can add subtle texture after flowering.
  • Deer Resistance: Astilbe is generally resistant to deer and rabbits, though browsing can vary with local pressure.

Ideal Uses

  • Focal Point: Plant where the lavender-purple plumes can stand out against green, gold, silver, or burgundy foliage companions.
  • Shade Borders: Use along shaded paths, border fronts, and foundation beds for late-season color and refined texture.
  • Woodland Gardens: Pair with hostas, ferns, brunnera, heuchera, ligularia, hellebores, and other moisture-loving shade perennials.
  • Containers: Grow in shaded containers where consistent watering can be maintained and the upright plumes can be featured.
  • Mass Planting: Plant in groups to create a fuller sweep of lavender-purple color in moist shaded beds.
  • Cut Flowers: Harvest the dense plumes for fresh bouquets or leave dried stems standing for late-season texture.

Low Maintenance Care

  • Watering: Water regularly and deeply so the root zone stays evenly moist during active growth and flowering.
  • Mulch: Apply organic mulch to conserve moisture, cool the crown, and reduce summer stress.
  • Soil Care: Topdress with compost or leaf mold to support rich soil, steady moisture, and strong bloom production.
  • Deadheading: Remove faded flower stems for a cleaner look, or leave them standing for dried ornamental texture.
  • Division: Divide mature clumps every 3 to 4 years if they become crowded or flowering begins to decline.
  • Pruning: Cut back old foliage in late winter or early spring before new shoots emerge.
  • Heat Care: Provide extra water and afternoon shade during hot dry weather to help keep the foliage fresh.

Why Choose Maggie Daley Chinese Astilbe?

  • Late Summer Color: Lavender-purple plumes extend the astilbe season after many earlier varieties have faded.
  • Glossy Foliage: Shiny dark green leaves provide a polished, lacy backdrop before and after bloom.
  • Dense Flower Spikes: Fuzzy upright plumes create a full, showy display without a coarse habit.
  • Useful Garden Size: Its mid-size form fits borders, foundations, woodland beds, containers, and cut flower plantings.
  • Pollinator Appeal: The summer flowers can attract bees, butterflies, and other beneficial garden visitors.

Maggie Daley Chinese Astilbe is an excellent choice for gardeners who want cool purple flowers, shiny foliage, and reliable late-season color in moist shade. Its dense plumes, upright habit, and refined texture make it a graceful addition to shaded borders, containers, woodland gardens, foundation plantings, and cut flower displays.

Great product, saved my hair
Honestly this is one of the best products I have ever used for my hair. I have been able to increase volume and thickness of my hair. The product is versatile and can be used in conjunction with other products as well. The application is very easy and I usually use any excess product on my skin for the added benefits. If you have fine hair your hair will get oily if you don't wash out so I just apply at night and wash out the next morning. Overall my hair is so much healthier and I am really happy I found this. Also I apply this 2-3 times per week overnight and wash in the AM. It will stain your pillow case so sleep with a bonnet or something with breathable material.

Love this batana oil over the other brands
This batana oil has natural ingredients and leaves my hair very moisturized. I have seen some hair growth after using this for a few weeks. So it's great value for my money. It does have a coffee scent but that doesn't bother me at all. I would definitely repurchase this again.

**UPDATE ON PDT*** Ingredients changed
Ok here’s my update (4/4/26) We loved it. It did what it was supposed to do in the beginning but now I stopped using the product. Ingredients must’ve changed. It’s now a darker color, it doesn’t dissolve like it did in the past, and worst part— my daughter’s hair started breaking off. It could just be her hair but I don’t want to take chances. The ingredients definitely changed. We are trying azure batana and will stick with it for 3 months to see results. But as of now their product looks like the real deal. It’s a shame because I like consistency. I’ll stick with one product for years. Oh well. Tossed this one out. (Pic 1-2 AFTER USING; Pic 3 BEFORE USING) Yes it works. It smells so if you’re sensitive to smells, you might only want to use it as a deep conditioner. Both my daughter & I are adjusted to the smell and love the results so we can easily prioritize our results over the less than fragrant odor. But the results!!! My daughter lost 40% of her hair a yr ago to severe scalp ezcema (+ a trip to St Martin’s beautiful yet salty water). We used other products with marginal success. I started using this product 2 months ago & I already see results. We use it twice weekly as a spot treatment along the crown & nape of her head, and deep condition with it twice monthly. Her locs are growing and more importantly, her edges and nape are recovering tremendously. We’re going to keep at it!! We like the texture (moist but not sticky), it leaves her locs moisturized but not weighed down. Her hair is drinking it up. Will repost after 2 more months.
