Originating along the Northeast coast, Prunus maritima has evolved to withstand salt spray and low-nutrient environments. Its ability to tolerate drought and poor soil conditions makes it a standout choice for difficult planting sites. Beyond its hardiness, the shrub provides small fruits that are enjoyed by people and wildlife. The foliage supports biodiversity by hosting the larvae of several butterfly species, including the red spotted purple and Eastern tiger swallowtail.
