Introduced to American gardeners by SSE in 1992. Originated in Russia where its short vines (up to 5' long) and ease of growing made it perfect for dacha or second-home gardens near Moscow. Produces bumper crops for fresh eating and pickling. 45-50 days.

Learn To Grow It

This crop can be direct seeded into the soil after the last spring frost. You can also start plants indoors 3-6 weeks before the last frost date.

If you are direct seeding, plant in groups of 2-3 seeds and keep the healthiest plant that matures. Space your plants or seeds 12-18 inches apart and plant 1/2-1 in. deep.
 

Make sure that your soil is well fertilized as this crop is a heavy feeder and takes a lot of nutrients from the soil. Consider adding compost to the soil the year before you plant.

These plants prefer warm weather and soil so they should be grown when temperatures are over 68 degrees F. You should avoid watering them from above as damp leaves may be susceptible to disease.

Update: these are great! I only charged them the day they arrived 3 months ago from Amazon, and have not had to charge them yet. They work efficiently every time my whole family loves using them,,especially the grandkids. I specifically wanted "push button" , and easy-rechargeable. I have arthritis so it's pretty amazing and wonderful. These rechargeable grinders are lightweight when they arrive, and easy to fill from the top. For each grinder, you will need to turn the top opening slightly to the left to release it, and then pull it open. My 9yo grandson had to show me. The salt and pepper grindersmake a relatively, low grinding sound, and have a small, shining,light at the bottom where the salt and pepper come out onto the food. The performance is good, the salt and pepper output seems not too much and not too little. Charging these grinders was extremely easy, and the little charging unit stand is provided with a C charger which you can connect into the back of the charging unit, and a USB connection on the other end for the wall .

I bought these 6 months ago and they are great. They have stopped charging several times. The problem is the salt gets on the contacts and oxidized the contacts and the unit stops charging. You take sand paper and clean the contacts and they work fine again. I feel if the material on the charging port is made with stainless steel and the contacts on the grinders themselves are larger, I would have given this a 5 star. Even As it stands, I would purchase these again. I have several bad experiences buying manual grinders that last about a month and break. These are High Quality, but need to upgrade the contacts.
