This tall, columnar plant features long, spiny stems lined with small, round, deciduous green leaves that emerge during the growing season and drop off in dry periods. Despite its tough appearance, it is relatively easy to grow in full sun with excellent drainage and minimal watering. In warm climates, it can grow quite tall—up to 30 feet in the ground—but remains more modest in pots.
