Phlebodium aureum 'Davana'

Phlebodium aureum 'Davana' has blue-green fronds with curled, strongly undulating margins. The lobed fronds create a frilled surface even on young plants, with lighter new growth deepening as the fronds mature.

The fern grows from creeping, hairy rhizomes close to the mix surface. Shallow potting keeps the rhizomes near the surface, while the roots below sit in lightly moist, open substrate.

Frilled Fronds on Phlebodium aureum 'Davana'

  • Frond edge: Strongly undulate, lobed margins create a curled, frilly outline.
  • Young fronds: Juvenile fronds can emerge light yellow-green before deepening in colour.
  • Mature colour: Older fronds darken to green with a greyed-green waxy cast.
  • Growth shape: Upright to arching fronds rise from creeping rhizomes.
  • Texture: Smooth, matte frond surfaces contrast with the hairy, scaly rhizomes.

Cultivar Background and Growth of Phlebodium aureum 'Davana'

Phlebodium aureum is an epiphytic fern native from the southeastern United States and the Caribbean through tropical America. 'Davana' is the protected cultivated selection Phlebodium aureum 'RAADPHLE01'.

It was selected from a spontaneous whole-plant mutation found among cultivated 'Blue Star' plants and develops more pronounced frilled fronds. The creeping rhizome should sit close to the surface, where it can extend gradually across the pot.

Below the rhizome, a loose moisture-retentive mix gives the roots contact with water while reducing stagnant wetness around the creeping growth points.

Care for Frilled Phlebodium aureum 'Davana'

  • Light: Bright filtered light keeps the fronds firm; harsh sun can mark the curled margins.
  • Water: Keep the substrate lightly moist, then let excess water run through the pot.
  • Substrate: A loose fern or epiphyte-style mix keeps moisture available while reducing stagnant wetness around the rhizome.
  • Pot shape: A shallow container gives the creeping rhizome space to travel across the surface.
  • Humidity: Moderate to higher humidity slows drying along the curled frond edges.
  • Repotting: Move to a wider pot when the rhizome reaches the edge or the mix breaks down.

Frond Problems on Phlebodium aureum 'Davana'

  • Crispy frond edges: Dry air, dry substrate or direct sun can crisp the frilled margins.
  • Yellowing fronds: Wet, compact substrate can stress the roots and rhizome.
  • Soft rhizomes: Deep planting and stagnant moisture can damage the creeping growth points.
  • Pests: Scale can appear on stressed indoor ferns and should be removed early.
  • Uneven colour: Young fronds naturally appear lighter before maturing to deeper green tones.

Safety for Phlebodium aureum 'Davana'

Phlebodium aureum is considered non-toxic to cats, although chewed plant material can still cause mild stomach upset. Keep the fern away from pets that repeatedly chew indoor plants.

Botanical Background of Phlebodium aureum 'Davana'

The species was first published by Linnaeus as Polypodium aureum in 1753 and later placed in Phlebodium by John Smith in 1841. The genus name Phlebodium is linked with veins, and the species epithet aureum means golden.

Color: Four colors, Size: 5cm (ball only)
These balls are super bouncy and durable. My dog loves them and for the price these are totally worth it! I think they are as durable as nerf balls and equal in size, and much cheaper!

Rope comes out at the slightest force. Pointless tug toy!
Color: Four colors, Size: 6cm (with rope)
If your dog pulls on these (and why wouldn’t he?), the rope immediately comes out. Turns out they just fuse the ends of the nylon rope together, which is no match for a dog playing tug. Any dog, any level of pulling will dismantle these. We’ve managed to reinsert the rope to a couple of these and KNOT it, which gives you a shorter rope but a toy that can withstand some play. But if I had wanted a DIY toy, I’d have used the balls and rope I already own.
