Primo Arborvitae (Thuja occidentalis 'Primo')

Primo Arborvitae brings a refined, sculpted look to small spaces, giving you evergreen structure without the bulk of a traditional hedge. Its compact size makes it easy to place near entries, along foundations, or in tight beds where you want a clean vertical accent. The deep green foliage adds steady color all year and pairs beautifully with flowering shrubs and lighter evergreens. If you like the character of a specialty conifer but need something hardy and easy to live with, Primo fits the job.

Distinctive Features

This dwarf selection develops a narrow, irregular spire with highly textured sprays that can resemble the look of a small hinoki-type conifer. Foliage is rich deep green through the growing season and typically stays a muted green through winter rather than turning strongly bronze. Growth is slow to moderate and the plant usually matures around 3 to 4 feet tall and about 1 to 1.5 feet wide, keeping a tight footprint. The naturally sculpted form is the main feature, creating an architectural evergreen accent without frequent shaping.

Growing Conditions

  • Sun: Full sun to part shade, with best density and form typically in brighter exposures.
  • Soil: Moist, well-drained soil is ideal, and it performs best where the root zone does not stay soggy.
  • Water: Water regularly during establishment, then water during extended dry periods to prevent stress and thinning.
  • USDA Zones: 4 to 8.
  • Placement: Provide good airflow and avoid hot, reflected-heat sites that dry the soil quickly.

Ideal Uses

  • Focal Point: Place one as a compact evergreen focal point to add a sculpted, vertical accent in a small bed or near an entry.
  • Containers: Use in patio containers for a hardy, architectural evergreen that keeps its shape without constant pruning.
  • Foundation Planting: Tuck into foundation beds where you want height and texture without crowding walkways or windows.
  • Small Gardens: Add to tight landscapes where scale matters but you still want a conifer look and year-round structure.
  • Mixed Evergreens: Pair with rounded conifers and broadleaf evergreens to create contrast in shape and texture.

Low Maintenance Care

  • Pruning: Little pruning is needed, and light touch-ups are best in late spring if you want a cleaner outline.
  • Mulching: Mulch the root zone to conserve moisture and buffer temperature swings, keeping mulch a few inches off the stems.
  • Watering: Deeply water during heat and drought, especially in the first couple of seasons and in containers.
  • Fertilizing: Feed lightly in spring only if growth is weak, using a slow-release evergreen fertilizer according to label directions.
  • Pest Check: Watch for bagworms and treat early if you see hanging cases or chewed foliage.

Why Choose Primo Arborvitae?

  • Architectural Texture: Highly textured sprays create a sculpted look that stands out from standard arborvitae.
  • Small Footprint: Stays narrow and compact, making it easy to fit into tight beds and smaller properties.
  • Evergreen Consistency: Deep green color provides steady structure and a finished look in every season.
  • Container Friendly: Works well in pots for patios and entries when given drainage and consistent moisture.
  • Easy Routine: Holds its character with simple watering, mulch, and minimal pruning.

If you want a compact evergreen that looks special without demanding specialty care, Primo Arborvitae is a smart pick. Give it good light, consistent moisture while it establishes, and a well-drained site for best long-term performance. It shines as a single accent, but it also works repeated in small groups for a cohesive, designed effect. Over time, it becomes a dependable evergreen detail that makes the whole planting feel more intentional.

Pup Loves It, Some Other Notes
Color: Orange
We've had this for about six months and my 75 lb, 14-month-old German Shepherd pup LOVES IT. Her favorite is "Crazy Bouncing Mode." In fact, she doesn't care much for the normal mode. She chews it a lot - even drops it in her water bowl at times - and it's still going strong. This is a great purchase. It's nice hands-off entertainment. Do know that it is heavy compared to a normal ball - if your pup likes dropping it on the ground like mine does, it will land with a hard "thud," even with the included sleeve. Hopefully you don't have downstairs neighbors. Also know that the cover that goes over the charging port is removable and your dog may choke on it if they chew it in just the right manner. Definitely only let the pup play with it while supervised. All in all, great toy.

If you were looking for a sign to buy this, here it is
Color: A) Small 2.5" Ball
If you are looking for a ball that can stand up next to a heavy, aggressive chewer.. this is a good choice. Our Pitbull literally destroyed any and every toy that she gets with the exception of one kind of kong ball. She tore through the kong Frisbees, any kind of squeaker toy, and the wobble wag giggle ball (she usually always ends up destroying these but it takes a few weeks. Today she beat her record and had her brand new ball destroyed within the first 30 minutes of us taking it out of the box). But, this ball she has not been able to destroy. I'd like to believe that the Kong ball she has and this ball are made of the same material. Because they are the only balls she can't ruin. And it's not because of a lack of trying. We have watched her sit there and chew with a side of her mouth for an hour or more, trying to make some kind of indention or tear in it and it just never happened. She loves to chew this thing, chase this thing, sleep with this thing. I most certainly recommend this ball. If it is I'ah proof then it is most certainly, 100% a durable ball and worth every penny

Chew King Supreme Chew Toy
Color: B) Medium 3" Ball
So far, freaking amazing. This ball is awesome. I have a 90 lb American Bulldog. Like other reviews. Lot of " indestructible balls" lasted minimum time. Not this one. She even took it to bed with her I bought the 3 inch ball, not the 4 inch ball. The 3 inch ball works amazingly for a large Dog. Yes the 4 inch would be better. So in my opinion, either ball would be fine. As others also said. This ball keeps a active Dog busy for hours. Love to play catch. Love frozen peanut butter in it. One last thing. The price is amazing. I don't see needing to buy another, unless it is lost, because this is made to last. We couldn't be happier.

Malinois proof
Color: B) Medium 3" Ball
So far this has held up great. My Malinois who has destroyed nearly every ball I’ve gotten her, this one has lasted over 3 weeks without a dent, compared to some that don’t even last a day lol. Although the medium size is a little too big for her liking she still plays with it. It’s very durable and I like the middle part for engagement as well. I would recommend if you have a dog who destroys every ball possible.

Actually Durable
Color: B) Medium 3" Ball
One of the few "heavy duty" toys that my pittie hasn't destroyed after a couple of weeks. Most of them last two days. She's an absolute beast so I'm confident if she can't destroy it, few dogs can.
