The Calathea Rattlesnake, also known as Calathea lancifolia, is a stunning tropical plant known for its unique foliage and vibrant patterned leaves. Calathea is a cultivar of calatheas and are often called 'prayer plants' because of their unique leaf movements: they raise and lower their leaves from day to night as a part of their circadian rhythm. This phenomenon is called nyctinasty. Plant movements are controlled by a flux of water pressure in the pulvini - nodes at the base of the leaves. Scientists theorize that these movements are meant to follow the sun and catch as much light as possible -- an essential trait for a forest-floor-dwelling plant!
Here are some key points about the Calathea Rattlesnake:
Appearance Leaf Pattern: The Calathea Rattlesnake features long, lance-shaped, wavy-edged leaves with striking patterns resembling a rattlesnake's skin.
Coloration: The leaves have a beautiful combination of dark green hues with light green markings that create an eye-catching contrast.
Size: Mature plants can grow up to 2-3 feet in height, making them ideal for indoor settings.
Light: Prefers bright, indirect light but can tolerate lower light conditions. Avoid direct sunlight to prevent leaf burn.
Watering: Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged. Water when the top inch of soil feels dry.
Humidity: Thrives in high humidity levels. Mist the leaves regularly or place a humidifier nearby.
Temperature: Maintain temperatures between 65-85°F (18-29°C) and protect the plant from air drafts.
Soil: Plant in well-draining, nutrient rich organic soil to ensure proper root health.
Fertilization: Feed with a balanced liquid fertilizer monthly during the growing season.
