A superb alternative to Akadama. Can be graded at home to produce finer or coarser grades as required or used exactly as supplied.

Natural zeolites form where volcanic rocks and ash layers react with alkaline groundwater. Zeolites have a porous structure that can hold up to 60% of their own volume in water. Zeolites also attract plant nutrient molecules and hold them loosely which prevents leaching and also allows a plant to absorb them easily.

Use of up to 60% by volume of zeolite in bonsai growing media promotes good drainage while improving moisture retention. It will absorb harmful substances and promote a consistent nutrient rich rhizosphere. Long term, plants will require less fertiliser and produce stronger more consistent growth.

Our zeolite has an appearance similar to Japanese Akadama. However it is significantly more absorbent and being much harder will not break down even after many years in the pot. As the supply of Akadama becomes increasingly contentious and the cost rises it will be replaced by zeolites. Being a naturally occurring mineral our zeolite is approved for use in organic production and is entirely safe to the environment including ground waters.

Our zeolite has a beautiful light brown colour. 3-7mm mesh graded to produce an approximate particle size close to this range. The average pH of our product is between 7-8. Our zeolite also contains varying percentages of potassium, iron, calcium, magnesium, manganese and phosphorus.

In general we would recommend mixing zeolite products with other ingredients with desirable characteristics, for example Bark - Moler - S-Te™ (Kyodama) and Supalite. For more information see our Guide to Selecting Bonsai Soils.

3-8mm particle size which means all of the particles will pass through a 8mm screen so some pieces will be oversize in length. 

Zeolite is a naturally ocuring product. The colour of this material will vary depending upon the deposits being mined and also the moisture content. Pictures are for illustration and represent what the product typically looks like.

It's not necessary to sieve our zeolite but simply mix and pot up your plants in the normal way. Once complete water thoroughly, watching the water that drains from the bottom of the pot, once this runs clear you are finished. The finer dust will simply wash away leaving a very high percentage of clean micro-pores that will be colonised by fine feeder roots and mycelium resulting in the perfect natural rhizosphere and will ensure your plants absolutely flourish.

Any dust contained within our crushed aggregate products will settle into the spaces between larger particles and once removed will not significantly effect the volume you purchased.
