Also known as Chines Spinach, Callaloo, Yin Choi, Tampala and 苋菜 in Mandarin, Amaranth is widely popular in many parts of the world as aside from being easy to grown and very tasty (similar to spinach) its leaves are rich in vitamin A and are also full of flavonoid polyphenolic antioxidants like beta-carotene, zeaxanthin, and lutein which provide a protective layer against oxidative stress caused by free radicals.
Germination and Planting Guide
2 Choices:
1) In Feb sow indoors or greenhouse in trays and keep in a light place, thinning and potting on as required then transplant the young plants outside once the soil has warmed and the risk of frost has gone. This is how I grow Amaranth.
2) Sow directly outside where they are to grow once risk of front has gone and soil warmed. Depending on where you are in the UK this could be April-May
Soil - Adapts to most soils, but grows best in fertile, well-drained loam.
Position - Full/Partial sun.
Frost tolerance - Amaranth seeds need warm soil to germinate and can be damaged by late frosts. Mature plants are easier to harvest after a light frost in the autumn.
Feeding - Before planting, enrich the soil with a light application of a balanced organic fertiliser or well rotted organic matter
Spacing - Plant 45cm apart in rows circa 90cm apart
Thinning - Thin directly sown seedlings to 45cm apart.

Not the best quality

The shelving unit was not as I had expected. It arrived damaged. The damage is on the under side though. They are hollow and not hardwood as I had expected. Save your money if you want something of good quality. These are like 3 pieces of pressed wood glued together. They are space saving and look great in my space. The mounting hardware it comes with was plenty enough to hang these but make sure you hang them in the studs if at all possible. Assembly was simple. It does come with a micro level. Which a kid or pet could accidentally swallow. It’s like pill capsule sized so just be careful when opening the package.

Good quality, but a few issues with the hidden mounts and levelness.

These are quite nice and also sturdy. Only complaint I have is that I bought a couple of these, and on one of them, only one of them, it was difficult to get the hidden mounts to go into the holes. I think it was probably a manufacturing defect thing. Also, on that particular one, it wasnt as level as the other. Not a show stopper, but if you need a perfectly level type of mounting situation, I would be careful here.
