Prepare to be captivated by the Monstera obliqua 'Peru', a rare and ethereal beauty that stands among the most coveted plants in the houseplant world. At Happy Houseplants, we’re incredibly proud to offer this extraordinary collector’s specimen—meticulously sourced and hand-selected for its delicate foliage and botanical perfection.

Unlike any other, the Monstera obliqua 'Peru' boasts ultra-fine, lace-like leaves adorned with dramatic fenestrations—so large and intricate, each leaf appears to be more hole than leaf. It’s a marvel of nature, a living artwork that feels almost too magical to be real. This is not your average houseplant—this is one for the true plant connoisseurs.

A quick note on names—there’s often confusion in the plant world around common names, and Monstera is no exception. Terms like “Monkey Mask”, “Swiss Cheese Plant”, or even “Monstera obliqua” are frequently used in the trade to describe a wide range of plants, most often referring to Monstera adansonii, which is beautiful in its own right, but far more common. In reality, the Monstera genus is incredibly diverse, with over 40 recognised species and many naturally occurring variants and subspecies found throughout Central and South America.

This is not the more commonly sold Monstera adansonii or Monstera Obliqua 'Monkey Mask'. Monstera obliqua 'Peru' is an extremely rare variant with tissue-thin leaves and an otherworldly appearance. Its foliage is far more delicate and fenestrated than adansonii, and it grows much slower, making it a true collector's dream, you’ll see the difference the moment it arrives.

Unless you're a botanist, have access to DNA testing, or are able to observe the plant in flower or growing in its native habitat, telling the difference between Monstera species can be incredibly difficult. Many forms look strikingly similar when young, and even on the same plant, leaf shape can vary over time depending on age and growing conditions. At Happy Houseplants, we use common trade names that are widely recognised in the UK plant community to help make identification easier.

Native to the humid, shaded rainforests of Peru, this elusive beauty thrives in the gentle embrace of filtered light and moisture-rich air. In the wild, it grows as a compact vine in the forest understory, clinging gracefully to trees. Its slow-growing, compact nature makes it especially suited to life in a controlled indoor environment—whether in a glass terrarium, a display case, or nestled into your prized collection.

Caring for this rare gem requires a little extra love, but the rewards are more than worth it:

Light Requirements: Bright, indirect light is perfect. Avoid harsh sun, which can scorch the delicate foliage. Filtered light near an east- or north-facing window works wonders.

Temperature and Humidity: Keep it cosy—between 18°C and 26°C is ideal. This plant loves high humidity, so think terrariums, humidity trays, or a grow cabinet. Mist regularly or keep it somewhere naturally humid like a kitchen or bathroom.

Watering: Let the top inch or two of soil dry out before watering again. Overwatering is one of the quickest ways to upset this sensitive soul—keep things lightly moist but never soggy.

Soil and Potting: This Monstera craves a light, airy mix. We recommend a combination of coco coir, orchid bark, perlite, worm castings, and a dash of magic. Okay, maybe not magic—but it feels like it.

Fertilising: During the growing season (spring and summer), feed with a gentle, diluted fertiliser every few weeks. For best results, use our exclusive Organic Tropical Plant Food—it’s packed with everything your plant needs, made from seaweed and nothing synthetic.

Size: W12cm x H30cm (Beautiful, healthy plants with a stunning start to their growth journey!)

Our top Tip: To give your Monstera obliqua 'Peru' the best chance to truly flourish, it’s essential to provide a moss pole or some kind of vertical support. In its natural habitat, this plant climbs trees in the humid rainforest understory, and it’s genetically programmed to grow upwards. While it’s undeniably a slow grower, offering it something to climb—along with a bit of patience—will make all the difference. A moss pole encourages larger, more mature foliage and healthier overall growth. Giving it space and structure to grow into will reward you in time with the most spectacular leaf development this rare beauty has to offer.

Styling-wise, Monstera obliqua 'Peru' is a conversation piece. It’s not just a plant—it’s a statement. Display it in a glass dome, a sleek modern planter, or let it gently trail from a shelf in a warm, bright room. Its unusual foliage adds a delicate, textural element that few other plants can offer.

Whether you're a seasoned collector or simply someone who appreciates the finer things in life, this plant will quickly become one of your most treasured companions.

Simply delightful espresso machine
Color: A-Silver, Style: Button
I am not one to write reviews very often, and I am not a coffee snob obsessing over everything to do with the perfect espresso shot. I do have lots to say about this machine though. My previous Mr Coffee Cafe Barista machine died after many years and I wanted something that would allow me to steam my own milk instead of it being done for me. I also didn’t want to spend more than $150 either as my circumstances are not great right now… Anyway, after reading many reviews on similar machines, I settled on this beaut. I am more than happy with my purchase! The machine is small and takes up half the space my old machine did, which earns high spousal approval. The all stainless steel body looks good and durable and wipes down easily. It looks good on the countertop. It heats up fast for a thermoblock design, and while the water capacity in the tank isn’t the greatest, a full tank is enough to pull two espresso shots, steam two jugs of milk, plus allows for preheating the group head and portafilter and flushing everything afterwards. The machine pulls a pretty decent shot with pre-ground espresso and leaves a hard puck after extraction, something I always had issues with on my old machine which would always leave a soupy mess. I do weigh my dose (13 grams), use a WDT needle tool, distributor, tamper and puck screen. While I do not have control over everything, you can set the volume of water dispensed for each of the buttons on the panel. The single shot button is set at 30 milliliters. I can’t get a full 15 grams into the portafilter for a true 1:2 ratio but it’s close enough. The milk frother is fast and steams the milk in about a minute and actually produces some good results. The wand seems durable and the rubber grip is well placed so you don’t scald your fingers. This does a great job for frothy cappuccinos or silky lattes. The pump is not loud either which is good for a machine at this price point. Please follow the instructions to prep the machine when you first set it up. Run a few shots through the machine before you start using it to remove any trace particles in the water lines and pump. And plastic smell from the water tank will be removed by doing this. For a basic espresso machine, this is a good buy. It seems to be well made, and it suits my present financial circumstances. Sure, I wouldn’t mind a more mainstream brand and probably a better quality machine, but for the money, don’t hesitate in buying this machine. I got mine for $129 in early 2025 and I’ve seen this at $99 before over the holidays. It’s a simply delightful espresso machine that I’m glad to have.

Excellent machine
Color: A-Silver, Style: Button
Been using this machine every day for over 3 months. It works great and makes a fantastic cup of espresso. Some observations: - Use with a conical grinder. Small changes to the size of the grind makes a significant change to the pressure that can be generated (smaller grind = higher pressure). This results in significant changes to the flavor of the espresso. - The screen cups have a small notch/bump in them to keep them from falling out of the handle when dumping the grinds. They can only be inserted/removed from the handle in one way. I replaced them with ones without the notch (my preference). - If you allow it to run out of water while running, you have to release the internal pressure by opening the steamer wand valve (put a cup under the wand). The machine is not broken - don't panic. - The pour volume for a single and double can be adjusted (read the manual) but the minimum pour size is a little large in my opinion. The pour can be stopped manually but you have to be monitoring the pour to turn it off. - There is some vibration in some conditions that can cause the cup to wander during the pour. So it is best to keep an eye on the pour in any case (see comment above)

Cheaper than Breville Bambino and probably better
Color: A-Silver, Style: Button
I have a Breville Bambino but bought this for my parent’s house as I was hosting a party there for a week. In comparison to the Bambino, this Casabrew produces more espresso for a double with more foam with less grounds (15g for Casabrew vs 18g for Bambino). Although I had to use the hot water function repeatedly to decrease the temperature and prevent over heating, I was able to use the milk frother function for 7 drinks in a row without any issue. The machine takes up more room vertically and the materials seem more solid than the Breville and at a lower price. I am very happy with this product and would’ve been happy with it over the Breville had I known how good it was. It was easy to set up, brew time was quick, temperature good without having to warm up the machine like it suggested. No leakage at all. Excellent product. PS. If noise level is important to you, the Breville is less noisy.
