Description

bird's nest fern has brown spots Asplenium nidusThe Bird's Nest Fern is an explosion of greenery wherever you keep it. It likes brighter light than the ferns that grow in the UK, since it's evolved in the South Pacific, but still should be kept out of direct sun. It is an epiphyte, so it grows onto trees or rocks rather than into soil; make sure its roots don't sit soggy and that plenty of air can get to them. Scientific Name Asplenium nidus (nest fern) Common Name Bird's Nest Fern, Pleated Bird's

Scientific Name
Asplenium nidus (nest fern)

Common Name
Bird's Nest Fern, Pleated Bird's Nest Fern

Origin
Native to tropical Southeastern Asia, Eastern Australia, Hawaii, Polynesia, Christmas Island, India, and eastern Africa

Light
Likes bright, indirect light; a splash of direct sun in autumn and winter will help with its dormancy. Not suitable for low light where it is at higher risk of root rot.

Water
Allow the top third of the soil to dry out between waters; this will mean less frequent watering in less bright spots!

Humidity
Average humidity is fine for the Bird's Nest Fern; A humidity tray would be appreciated but misting can cause issues with the foliage. A hose down to clear it of dust every so often will be helpful as long as the leaves are able to dry out.

Soil
Use a well-draining soil mix, for example with added bark, to allow plenty of air to get to the epiphytic roots. Add bark or an Orchid blend to soil designed for Ferns for the perfect mix. Repot every few years in spring as the plant grows.

Food
Feed every four weeks with water in the growing season, reducing to every six in autumn and winter.

Temperature
Temperatures between 12-26°C are ideal for this plant. It can be brought outdoors in summer, but make sure it's in a shady spot, and watch for pests when bringing it back in!

Pet-safe
Yes, but too much nibbling won't be good for pets, small humans or the plant!

Sprouts Top Tips
Water into the soil directly to prevent extra water sitting on the leaf and causing issues. If the potting mix is drying out slowly, you can poke the soil with a chopstick or similar sized stick to allow more oxygen in and mimic the movement of insects.

Did you know?
Asplenium are epiphytes, so will grow in unusual places, including in walls and split stones!

Puppy friendly
Color: Reed, Seaweed & Corn Husk, Seaweed & Corn Silk, Number of Items: 3
This is not designed for dogs who are chewers. I gave this to my adult dog thinking she could play with it and be entertained for a little while. She had it ripped up and spread around the room in about 10 seconds. I would maybe recommend this for puppies to have something softer and gentle on their little teeth and gums. It also makes a bot of a mess once it starts coming apart so I suggest using outside or where it can be contained. Little high of a price point for the value I got out of it

My dog was immediately interested in these. He loves carrying them around and chewing on them. I also like that they’re made from natural materials.

Start with 6 pack assortment to let the dogs choose their favorite. They are fragile and messy.

They are fragile and messy. I only give them to the husky for about 5 minutes as a calming reward. His favorite is seaweed and Timothy hay. Why because we feed Timothy hay on the farm. His second choice was corn leaf. He looked at me like I was crazy when he mouthed the corn silk ball. In the future I will just get the seaweed hay balls. The sensory taste and smell calms him down. The old lab is easier on these balls. More licking and sucking than hard chewing.

Safe and fun chew toy
Color: All, Number of Items: 12, Color: All, Number of Items: 12
My dog loves this straw toy immediately. It keeps her entertained and the natural materials are safe and easy to clean. Yes, she tears it up but that’s the part of the fun. I will keep buying.

Nice Idea, but Durability Was Very Limited
Color: Reed, Seaweed & Corn Husk, Seaweed & Corn Silk, Number of Items: 3
These woven grass chew balls are a nice concept and made from natural materials, which I appreciated. They are lightweight, easy for dogs to carry, and can be fun for light play or supervised interaction. The texture also seems appealing for chewing and tossing around. However, the main issue was durability. For my miniature Goldendoodle, the toys lasted only a few minutes before starting to come apart. If your dog is an active chewer, these may not hold up very long. They may be better suited for very gentle chewers or short-term play rather than dogs that like to really chew. The natural material aspect is a plus, but longevity was disappointing. Because of the limited durability, I’m giving these three stars. Good idea, but they did not last long enough for my dog.
