Monstera dubia

Monstera dubia is a shingling Monstera with juvenile leaves that press flat against a climbing surface. Young foliage is small, heart-shaped, and patterned with green and silvery tones, creating an overlapping tile effect when the stem is attached to a plank or bark-like support.

The plant changes as it matures. In nature and in humid, well-supported indoor setups, a climbing stem can eventually produce larger adult leaves with a more typical Monstera outline. The juvenile shingling stage is the usual indoor form, with leaves held flat only when the stem has a vertical surface to attach to.

Monstera dubia shingling profile

  • Juvenile habit: Leaves sit flat against a surface when the stem has enough contact.
  • Leaf pattern: Small heart-shaped blades show green and silver tones.
  • Stem behaviour: Aerial roots grip vertical material as the vine climbs.
  • Mature shift: Older climbing growth can produce larger leaves with a different adult structure.

Appressed growth in wet tropical forest

Monstera dubia is an accepted species in the Araceae family, native from Mexico to South Tropical America and Trinidad. It grows primarily in wet tropical forest as a climber, using aerial roots to attach closely to tree trunks and other vertical surfaces.

Indoors, the stem needs contact with a support, while the roots need a substrate that stays lightly moist but never stagnant. If the vine cannot attach, the leaves often sit away from the surface and the plant loses the tight shingling habit that makes the species distinctive.

Keeping Monstera dubia attached indoors

  • Support: Tie or clip the stem gently to a flat support while it is young and flexible.
  • Humidity: Moderate to high humidity improves aerial-root contact and smooth leaf expansion.
  • Light: Use bright filtered light to keep the vine compact and the juvenile pattern clear.
  • Watering: Water after the upper layer of the mix has dried, keeping the root zone evenly moist but aerated.
  • Substrate: Use a fine-to-medium aroid mix with bark, coco fibre, and mineral drainage.
  • Temperature: Keep the plant warm at about 18–27 °C and protect it from cold, wet conditions.
  • Pruning: Trim above a node if the vine becomes bare, then root healthy node cuttings warm.
  • Fertilising: Feed weakly while new shingles are forming on the board; rinse the potting mix if mineral salts collect near fine roots.
  • Repotting: Repot with the board or plank attached whenever possible, handling the root ball instead of pulling the shingled stem.

Lifted leaves, dull pattern and dry tips

  • Leaves lift from the board: Improve stem contact, humidity, and attachment before the stem hardens.
  • Weak silver pattern: Check light level and root health; stressed growth often looks duller.
  • Dry new tips: Stabilise moisture and humidity while the newest leaves are forming.
  • Yellow leaves near the base: Inspect for stale substrate, poor drainage, or watering before the pot has dried enough.

Safe placement for Monstera dubia

Monstera dubia is not pet-safe if chewed. Plant tissue contains calcium oxalate crystals that can irritate the mouth, throat, and stomach.

Meaning of Monstera dubia

Monstera dubia was published under its current combination by Engler and K. Krause in 1908. The species epithet dubia comes from Latin for “doubtful” or “uncertain”, while Monstera refers to the unusual adult leaf forms found in the genus.

A flat support lets Monstera dubia keep its tight shingled juvenile pattern as the vine climbs.

Durable toy but definitely NOT invincible
Size: Medium (Pack of 1), Color: Orange Gecko
BACKGROUND I have two labradors and, with my friends dogs over, we have a combined combination of five labradors at a time. If you have seen the film "Marley & Me" then you will understand our dogs. They tear through concrete, dry wall, and, well, just about anything they can get their paws and mouths on. It is very important to have plenty of toys for them to keep pre-occupied as most of the destruction is caused by dogs that are bored. Unfortunately, many items are not able to withstand this combined destructive force. I spotted these "Invincible" line of toys and thought they were worth a try. I ended up ordering basically one of every style and size. APPEARANCE The toys come in different sizes, colors, and shapes. The most common are the Gecko and the Snake. The toys are covered with a more durable cloth that is fuzzy and suppose to withstand quite a bit of chewing. Inside the toys are what are described as durable squeakers that, if punctured, will still squeak even after hours of being bitten and chewed upon. The larger the toy ordered, the more squeakers that are sewn into the toy. RELIABILITY I have to admit these toys did last about ten times as long as any other toy I have given my dogs. Unfortunately, nothing is indestructible. My dogs managed to find kinks in the lining of the toys that, once penetrated, will cause the toys to open leaving stuffing and squeak toys all over the place. The squeakers did withstand quite a bit of chewing before the squeaking went silent. I noticed that the snake toy did last quite a bit longer than the gecko or the little dragon characters. The snake had separate compartments for the squeakers and so, if one was torn out, the others survived. On the Gecko once its middle section was torn open the squeakers were lost. CUSTOMER SUPPORT Not utilized PROS: ++ Lasted about 10X times the length of time as other "invincible" toys CONS: ++ They are not truly "invincible" and will be destroyed over time CONCLUSION The invincible line of toys did last a lot longer than most toys that I have purchased for my labradors. I would recommend the snake over the gecko or other styles. I have had to toss the geckos as they were shredded but the snakes are still with me to this day six months later. Also note, even though "Invincible" is in the title, these toys are definitely not although you will save an incredible amount purchasing these toys once and having a gradual destruction process versus having to buy new toys continuously over the same period of time that these lasted.

The toy is no match for my dogs.
Size: Large (Pack of 1), Color: Pink Snake
The toy itself is well made and the squeaker work well. Unfortunately, it only lasted about 2 weeks before my Treeing Walker Coonhound pup (super chewer) had it shredded. My Plott hound ( heavy chewer) just loved these! She is older and they last longer for her. However she does love to go for the seems first then rips out the squeaker. But she will carry it around for months like that. I think she like the material. I'll probably go back to Walmart for the smaller cheaper ones for now.

Durable and he loves it! It is Ryker Der Hauswolf approved and I recommend it.

Review of Outward Hound Durablez Snake – Squeaky Plush Dog Toy, No Stuffing for Less Mess, Interactive & Tough, 6 Jumbo Squeakers, Puppies & Dogs, X-Large, 40" My best friend brought her 16-month-old German Shepherd up for a visit and I happen to love him to pieces! A few months ago, I bought the smaller version of this same toy snake for him and he LOVED it. Many squeaker toys he has eventually torn up, as puppies and others do. The smaller only has a small tear in the butt-end from playing some minor tug of war with it. This larger version is made just as well and with the same materials. It is very durable, but there are no toys indestructible. The only difference is the length, and it has 6 JUMBO squeakers as opposed to 5 smaller ones. It got here on the day of this post and he has not stopped playing with it! Now if you’re one that squeakers get on your nerves, this is not for you. But, if you’re like me and truly enjoy watching (and hearing) a fur baby having so much fun, then buy this now! The price is very reasonable in my humble opinion. It is Ryker Der Hauswolf approved and I recommend it.

Absolutely one of the best chew toys I've ever bought my dog
Size: Large (Pack of 1), Color: Green Gecko
Absolutely one of the best chew toys I've ever bought my dog. She's a lab-pit mix, about 70 lbs, loves to chew, and is almost pure muscle. There are no half-measures with my dog. When she plays tug of war, she's playing to win. Often, she ends up whipping her entire body back and forth violently to get that thing out of your hands. Playing with her feels like you're pulling against a freight truck. I've never had a plush chew toy last longer than 15-20 minutes. It rips, and suddenly out comes all the stuffing and squeakers. Impossible. I just stopped buying her plush toys altogether, which was such a shame because I know that's her favorite thing ever. But when I saw this on Amazon, I thought I'd give it a try. I wasn't expecting much, nothing is truly invincible. BUT THIS THING IS TOUGH! It's my dog's favorite, she loves the squeakers so much, and so we've played tug of war or keep away nearly every day since I bought it. Yeah, there's a small hole in it now, the fur's a little matted and it doesn't look at pretty as when I bought it, BUT IT STILL LIVES! It's lasted three whole months, which is miracle given my dog's seriously aggressive play style. Squeakers are intact, the black lining has held up, I really can't believe it. I've even given her free reign with it over the past couple of weeks, as I have another one saved for the day this finally dies. Even though she's allowed to take this thing behind the couch and really go at it in a serious chew session, she can't break that black lining. Amazing product.

Cute? Yes! Durable? Not so much…
Size: Large (Pack of 1), Color: Green Gecko, Size: Large (Pack of 1), Color: Green Gecko
Upon opening this toy I was hopeful that it would last my dog (medium size beagle mix) quite a while. While he enjoyed it, he was able to start ripping it up less than 24 hours after getting it. Now 10 days later, he’s completely destroyed it. He was able to rip open all layers of material, pull them apart, and tear all the squeakers out. While the squeakers are large, they could be a choking hazard for a large dog. Based on the advertised “durability” of this toy and how little time it lasted my dog, I would not purchase it again.
