Male plants produce a gymnosperm cone if pollinated with a nearby female. Botanically, this plant is closer to a conifer than to true palms!
They're low maintenance and prefer a bit of afternoon shade. Regular watering with well-draining sandy-peat soil is needed. Plants are reliably winter hardy in zones 9 and above. Well-established plants can be somewhat drought-tolerant.
Colder climate gardeners can grow Cycas revoluta in containers, moving them inside for the colder winter months. They can also be grown as a houseplant.
