Description

1940s cocktail dress 1940s Spectacular "Gloria" Silk Crepe Swing Dress – Shrimpton CoutureMade from an amazing printed stretch silk crepe that is cut on the bias so has a touch of stretch to it, this dress is one of the best 1940s dresses I have seen. It is tagged as a "registered Gloria dress" but though I have seen this label before I cannot not find any firm information on it. It is a beauty though so this company was definitely doing high end work. It was also definitely stored properly for all these years ,as the colors are as crisp

Made from an amazing printed stretch silk crepe that is cut on the bias so has a touch of stretch to it, this dress is one of the best 1940s dresses I have seen. It is tagged as a "registered Gloria dress" but though I have seen this label before I cannot not find any firm information on it. It is a beauty though so this company was definitely doing high end work. It was also definitely stored properly for all these years ,as the colors are as crisp and vibrant as the day it was made. The base is a deep navy blue and then onto this is are beautiful floral bouquets made of little rounded cornered squares of multiple colors that just  pop off the blue base! The cut is fitted with a high but V neck and extensive pleating along each shoulder and again just above the waist. The waist nips in and is accented even more with an attached panel of fabric that turns into two extremely ling ties that you can wrap and accentuate the waist even more wit. The skirt is cut straight with just a touch of extra fabric worked through the bottom of the vertical seaming so you can move with ease. It truly is a forties femme fatale dress under its floral exterior! Excellent condition.

Unlined and closes with side snaps. Attached ties at the waist.

The definitive paperback edition
Format: Paperback
I purchased the Oxford World's Classics edition of "Le Morte d'Arthur: The Winchester Manuscript" for a school reading assignment, and I can say with confidence that this is the version you want. The original Old English is present (it was virtually a new language), complete with very useful footnotes to assist with antiquated words and phrases. The story was intriguing, colorful, and poignant (it's a downer, but a well-written one), filled with memorable characters such as Sir Gareth and Sir Launcelot. If you have a taste for classic literature and are looking for a challenge, definitely give "Le Morte d'Arthur" a read, especially with this version.

This copy is an excellent modernization of Malory's text with helpful footnotes and endnotes
Format: Paperback
I got this book for class, so I've only read large segements of it. This copy is an excellent modernization of Malory's text with helpful footnotes and endnotes. The footnotes were always available to explain unfamiliar words without interrupting the flow of the story.

Delightful text, but the omissions are frustrating
Format: Paperback
The modern spellings of the original Middle English text make this book quite easy and fun to read. However if you're trying to follow the actual complete storyline or compare it side-by-side with one of the original full text versions the frequent omissions quickly become quite evident and frustrating as you realize just how abridged this version actually is. That being said, the foot-of-page glossary and explanatory notes are quite helpful and informative. If only they wouldn't have left so much of the text out this would be a five-star review.

Simple and easy to read
Format: Paperback
If you are looking to just understand Le Morte, this is a good book. It's written in modern English, due to the fact the author decided he wanted it to mirror the Winchester manuscript as closely as possible, that is, he wanted it to be written in the most easily accessible language of the time. Therefore, the Oxford edition of Le Morte is less bogged down in old spellings and archaic language as other versions of the text.
