An iconic and absolutely breathtaking documented Azzedine Alaia black bias-cut floor length asymmetric trained gown from his beloved 1998 spring/summer collection. In the 1980's when most of the fashion world was embracing sharp shouldered power dressing and baggy androgyny, Alaïa introduced the world to the 'body' and to his own skin tight dresses. Truly a showcase for the perfect human form, his bodycon look sat alongside the more masculine power suits of the decade. As Suzy Menkes said, "If there were any justice in this fashion world, Azzedine Alaïa would be a worldwide household name, instead of a cult hero. He defined the way an entire generation dresses and become the fashion revolution of the last decade." His trademark second skin dressing earned him the nickname of 'The King of Cling', thanks to his love and experimentation of uncompromising stretch fabrics. These were materials which he would fashion into almost perfect body stockings from a trade he learned years back during his time spent with an array of great couturiers that he not only studied under, but greatly admired; namely Charles James, Madeleine Vionnet and Cristobal Balenciaga.

This stunning museum quality hourglass trained gown is a perfect example of his genius. As shown, the same gown was modeled by Naomi Campbell with Azzedine Alaïa himself and was highlighted at the London’s Design Museum, during an exhibition honoring the designer. We were also thrilled to spot Rhianna wearing the same gown during her 2013 Grammy's performance. The dress is made from luxurious black semi-sheer acetate knit that hugs and molds to your body to help create smooth lines. Alaïa’s use of black, his most widely used and favorite color, acts as the protagonist in all areas of his collections. He believed that if he limited the color palette, then this would leave him nowhere to hide and this in turn would bring forward his indulgence to develop the purest of expressions in his ideals of structure. As with all Azzedine Alaia pieces, this gown is cut to highlight your every curve. The halterneck has a seductive scooped plunge which creates great cleavage. The nipped waist falls into an hourglass bias-cut asymmetric trained design. There is even a clever side hand-loop to help while you walk. This 1998 documented Alaia designer gown is in beautiful condition with no stains, discoloration or alternations. Garment closes with a hidden carefully placed back hooks. Only sign of wear are two very small little holes by the bottom hemline which are not noticeable when worn. A gorgeous wearable investment piece that will continue to increase in value.
