This rare vintage 1950s Helen Rose silk party dress is not only the most joyous confection, but a very important piece of fashion history.

Helen Rose was an important figure in both fashion and Hollywood from the 1940s, through the 1960s and beyond. An Academy Award-winning costume designer, she worked with young starlets like Elizabeth Taylor while working at movie studio MGM. She was known for her fashion-forward approach, making a name for herself by veering from precise historical accuracy in period pieces. She began producing garments inspired by her designs for the screen, and they quickly became highly-sought-after by her Hollywood clientele. Rose became the premier bridal designer of the time— she designed Elizabeth Taylor's wedding dress for her first wedding in 1950, as well as

Grace Kelly's wedding dress for her marriage to Prince Rainier of Monaco— see images below. (Elizabeth Taylor's Helen Rose dress was auctioned for

$188,000 in 2013.)

Made in the late 1950s, this dress was designed by Helen Rose and retailed at JW Robinson. The emerald green rich silk is so lush— we rarely see fabric of this quality today. The ruched drop-waist bodice, together with the full pleated skirt and open neckline creates a flattering hourglass shape. I love the way the gathering at the shoulders creates little cap sleeves. But, the draped bow detail steals the show! It's so well done, and adds a unique movement to the dress. It features a silk-chiffon lining in the skirt. Note that the exact fiber contents are not listed

Measurements: PLEASE NOTE that this dress previously was let out in the bodice, so these measurements reflect the dress's current state, although it would be very easy to take it back in following the original seam line. It can be taken in on each side by .75" and at the back zipper by up to about 1" for a total of about 2.5", just following those existing seam lines. (You could obviously take it in more, too.) It is shown clipped on a size X-Small to simulate a proper fit; as-is, it will best fit a size Small and Medium but please refer to below measurements to be sure.

Chest: 36" laid flat (some extra room if needed thanks to gathering)

Waist: 28"

Hips are open

Length: 40.5" from shoulder to hem (can be let out by 4.5" if needed)

Good vintage condition overall; the fabric exhibits some fading in small areas but because of the nature of the silk and its sheen, it's really not noticeable when worn, and doesn't pick up in photos at all. With any questions about the specific condition or size, please email [email protected] for additional photos or measurements, as all sales are final.

Pretty, comfortable bra; small issue with cup structure
Size: 44D, Color: Black, Size: 44D, Color: Black
This is the first underwire bra I’ve worn in about six years - I’ve been wearing sport bras, so I wasn’t sure I’d like it. This bra is pad free, lightweight, and made of very pretty lace. When I put it on, the underwire was not uncomfortable, and the bra itself fit relatively well. I was surprised that the band in the back was also comfortable, not digging into my skin. The bra is well-made with one exception. I think the top of the cup requires more structure. I feel that it’s a little too loose and the contents will fall out if I was to lean over too far or if I were to run or do anything slightly athletic. I like the bra - it’s comfortable and pretty but it has that one issue with the cup structure. I’ve decided that this would not be a good bra to wear all day, but because it is so pretty, I would wear it with evening wear only.

Seam shows right in the center of your brea$t!
Size: 38C, Color: Dark Pink
Had to return even though I loved the fit and feel of the bra. The seam that goes across the middle and your nippies shows through on every type of shirt I wear. And one side has a little extra room which made it ripple vertically I guess because the material/lace is so thin. Real bummer. Would be nice if B cup was available. C was just a little large.

This one is a keeper…
Size: 36D, Color: Nude
Bra shopping is truly one of my least favorite things to do, and it is always so frustrating to me. Online bra shopping tends to be even worse, so I had little hope for this bra but took a chance anyway. I was pleasantly surprised by how much I liked it! A true test for me is whether or not I notice I’m wearing it. I’ve worn it off and on for several days and I totally forget about it. Having nurses two babies and approaching my 40s, my girls need a lot of support and this bra delivered. I thankfully discovered years ago that if you have deflated mom boobs, an unlined cup is the best way to take what you have and give it shape. This one does just that. I have very mixed feelings on the lace though. On the one hand, it is sexy and feminine and I don’t find that in bras very much anymore (at least not ones that provide the kind of lift and support that I require). However, the lace is very noticeable through a shirt. I really can only wear this bra with a thick top or sweater. Otherwise, it’s just too noticeable and I’m not comfortable with that. Wearing a cami underneath a top helps slightly though. Overall, I’m glad I have this bra and I’ll be ordering another color. It feels well made, the material is nice, and it gives my bust a shapely (and youthful 😭) appearance. I wore it all day in 90+ heat at Magic Kingdom and it didn’t bother me at all, so it definitely qualifies as lightweight and comfortable in my book. I took a stab at a size and the 36D feels right. I *maybe* could have gotten a 34 but the 36 doesn’t feel loose on the tightest loops. On occasion, depending on the brand, I can be either a D or DD. I think this is worth trying and looks more expensive than it really is!
