Favored by those inspired by the old-school cool, garage builders and riders of the nostalgic persuasion this transmission offers the worry-free convenience and reliability of a new BAKER Drivetrain product.

The introduction of the Knucklehead and the 4-speed in 1936 marked an epoch in the history of American motorcycles. Many consider the period of 1936-84 the holy grail of Harley fuckin Davidson. To carry on that legacy we developed the BAKER 4-speed Complete Transmission. The external architecture of our cast (A356-T6) 4-speed transmission case was modeled after factory cases to capture all the details and character of the original design. But we made many functional upgrades to address shortcomings of the original design like leaks, serviceability, and durability. The loose rollers on the maindrive gear were replaced with a radial ball bearing. The bronze bushings on the gearset were replaced with caged needle bearings. We added a provision, hidden in the back of the case, for an electronic speedo but retained the traditional worm gear speedo provision on the front of the case. The stock Fred Flintstone shift detent was replaced with a snot-slick linear ball-bearing detent for that smooth ‘snick-pop’ shift quality you expect from us.

The sprocket/pulley is not included in the complete transmission assembly. For the acquisition of these components, kindly contact BAKER Drivetrain at 517-339-3835.

Shift System:

We manufacture three shift drums for the 4-speed; the FX & FL types with conventional shift patterns and the N1 style. The N1 drum takes the FX pattern and relocates neutral down below 1st for a N-1-2-3-4 pattern as an alternative to the standard 1-N-2-3-4 pattern. Great for foot clutch and performance applications.

Shift Lever Orientation:

The FL shift drum in a Ratchet top cover is bottom pull only. The FX and N1 shift drum in a Ratchet top cover is top pull only. For further information, please contact us through the website chat, email us at [email protected], or call us at 517-339-3835.

Case Finish Options

You have 2 different options for case finish on the 4-Speed.

Raw Blasted Finish

Wrinkle Black Finish

Shift Drum Options

We manufacture 3 shift drums for the 4-speed; the FX & FL types with conventional shift patterns and N1 style.

The N1 drum takes the FX pattern and relocates neutral down below 1st for a N-1-2-3-4 pattern as an alternative to the standard 1-N-2-3-4 pattern. Great for foot clutch and performance applications.

Mainshafts Available

Mainshaft lengths

We manufacture 4 different length mainshafts for the 4-Speed; the 1936-64, 1965-69 (1st year of electric start), 1970-E84 and a 1970-E84 splined mainshaft for a modern clutch setup. BAKER does not make the late 84 (diaphragm clutch) style tapered mainshaft.  All mainshafts are designed for caged needle bearings for 3rd gear, no more metal to metal like stock.

Classic Kicker Gears

Kicker Gears

All BAKER 4-Speeds come standard with our Classic Kicker Gears. Made out of 1018 HR Steel, tumble finished to around a 20 micro and heat treated to 50-55 RC; these gears roll smooth as glass.

Kicker Cover Options

Kicker covers come in different finishes ranging from the standard chrome cover to the raw replica cover.

The offset kick arm comes standard.

4-Speed Gears with Lead-In Ramps

Gearset

4-speed gears and shafts are manufactured with 8620 steel. Vacuum carburized heat treat gives a case hardness of 58-62 Rockwell ‘C’. Gear tooth profiles are ground and finished with diamond tooling after heat treat to correct the tooth distortion that naturally occurs when you put a chunk of steel in a very hot furnace. Take off the shifter lid on our 4-speeds and turn the shafts; you will hear silence because the involute profiles are perfect. The designers of this transmission back in the '30s would be envious of the improvements we made to their design with modern manufacturing processes. We added lead-in helical ramps on the shift clutches to improve shift quality. All bronze bushings were replaced with modern low-friction bearings.

Case Options & Provisions

The 4-Speed Transmission case was modeled after the factory 1936 and 1965 cases to capture all the details and character, but we made some modern improvements as well. Our 1936-64 case is a no-ear case which utilizes the stock style speedo gear drive while our 1965-E84 is an ear case.  Both cases have the option to use the speedo gear drive location but we also molded an electronic speedometer mounting boss to follow the ear on our 1965-E84 case only. By tucking the electronic speedometer provision mount by the ear you can conceal any modern components keeping your bike looking stock.   Any factor Harley electronic speedometer will work with the transmission. We recommend using the Dakota Digital Billet sensor.  Depending on what type of electronic speedometer you use, an additional speedometer recalibration box might have to be purchased, BAKER PN 95E-56B.

Alignment Track

Like the stock 1936-64 4-Speed the BAKER 1936-64 cases have an alignment track on the bottom of the case (in between the studs), tongue-and-groove for the transmission plate to prevent lateral movement of the transmission. Any forward and aft adjustments are done through the adjuster boss location for the primary chain. This type of setup ensures a positive alignment when running belt drive applications, where you don’t have an inner primary to lock the motor to the transmission.

Section View of Internal Vent

Top Covers

All 4-speed top covers have a hidden vent system which allows the transmission to breathe. Machined into the internal walls of the billet top cover, the breathing system flows through the ratchet cavity and out through the shift cover.

Recommended Fluid / Level

Picking the right transmission fluid ensures the life and durability of your transmission, that’s why BAKER recommends a fully synthetic GL-5 rated gear weight oil of 75W-140. If a GL-5 rated gear lube is not available, these commonly carried viscosities (weights) will work: 75W-90, 75W-140 and 85W-140. BAKER does not recommend the use of Syn3 (20W-50). Transformative for Dry, Cracked Heels!
Color: Original Grey
I recently purchased Dr. Frederick's Original Moisturizing Heel Socks, and they have truly transformed the condition of my feet! I can’t recommend them highly enough. Effective Moisturization: These socks are infused with moisturizing agents that work wonders. After just a few uses, I noticed a significant reduction in dryness and cracking on my heels. My feet feel softer and smoother, and I love that I can wake up to beautifully moisturized skin. Comfortable Fit: The socks are incredibly comfortable to wear, with a snug yet gentle fit. I appreciate that they don’t feel restrictive, allowing me to walk around my home while wearing them without any discomfort. They are also lightweight, making them easy to slip on before bed. User-Friendly: They are super easy to use—just wear them overnight, and let the socks do their magic. I love the simplicity of incorporating them into my nighttime routine. Durable Quality: The quality of the socks is impressive. They wash well and have maintained their shape and effectiveness after multiple uses. I feel confident that they will last a long time. Final Thoughts: If you're struggling with dry, cracked heels, I highly recommend Dr. Frederick's Original Moisturizing Heel Socks. They are a fantastic investment in foot care and have made a noticeable difference in the health of my skin. These socks have become a must-have in my self-care routine!

These worked for me!
Color: Original Grey
They worked great. I bought these for cracked sore heels. It took 2-3 weeks but my heels no longer hurt and the cracks have closed and look more like an indention than a crack now. They feel so much better, but I'll probably wear them another week just to be sure they stay healed. They look and feel like regular socks from the outside but only cover the heel with the toe open. Not think but not thick, again like regular socks. They would probably be slippery on a smooth surface the same as socks. The inside feels like rubber or something smooth at the heel. I have washed them once each pair and accidentally dried one pair in the dryer. They still seem to feel the same so I think they're fine. They're pretty inexpensive and had different colors and sizes.

Truly Helped My Cracked Heels
Color: Original Grey
I didn't include a photo cause they look exactly like their advertisement photo. I so liked the silicon-type heel lining as it kept the heel-repair cream on my heel and did not get soaked up by the sock. But, it is so, so slippery when walking around in them! Take care to be mindful when you set each foot down as the lotion can slide your heel across the sock quite a bit. If these socks were for an elderly person, I would have them only sit while using the sock - no walking around for fear of falling. I have larger ankles and found that having both the top and the bottom hems/elastic, etc. the same size to be quite troublesome and was not a nice feeling or fit on my upper hem that hit my ankle. Don't get me wrong, I am so glad that I got them and I continue to use them and they are helping my horribly-cracked heels greatly, but I find that I have to keep moving the top hem up and down so that it doesn't stay in one position as it cuts in to my ankle. My feedback and advice might be to please make the upper hem somewhat larger than the one that is on the bottom and goes over my actual foot. They really should not be the same circumference...or else make different sizes - S, M, L, etc. That's really my only complaint or "con" to ordering these. I think they are a great concept and I like the fact that I can throw them in the washer and dryer.

Actually works, and really well
Color: Original Grey
I bought these because I got them on a great deal and was quite skeptical, but they actually worked exactly as advertised and I saw a huge difference after the first night! I understand why they don’t cover the whole foot like a regular sock (it would be stifling), but it would be incredible if they made a pair that go forward enough to cover the ball of the foot. One pair lasted about 3 weeks before the moisturizer wore out (I did notice a dropoff after washing, so for best results put them on when you’re clean and just for overnight, so you can avoid washing). Apologies for no photos- no one wants to see the before photos. These work so well I’ve just come back to order more even though I’m now paying full price. Definitely, definitely recommend.
