With slender stems, long petioles and green, arrow-shaped leaves, Anthurium balaoanum grows as a climbing Anthurium. As the stems lengthen, they are easier to manage when they can grow upward on a pole, plank or textured support.
On mature plants, the leaves can reach around 35 cm, while indoor size depends on support, light, warmth and root development. Established plants may flower, producing typical Anthurium spathes and spadices. Indoors, the climbing stems and arrow-shaped leaves are usually more noticeable than the flowers.
In Ecuador, Anthurium balaoanum grows in wet tropical habitats as a subshrub or epiphyte, often on trees. In a pot, it does best with an airy root zone, steady warmth and a structure it can climb.
Climbing growth and leaf shape

- Petioles: Long, grooved petioles lift the arrow-shaped leaves away from the climbing stem.

Anthurium balaoanum care and support
- Light: Bright, filtered light helps the stems and leaves develop well.
- Watering: Water once the top part of the mix has dried, keeping the root zone lightly moist in a free-draining mix.
- Substrate: Use a coarse, well-aerated Anthurium mix with bark and pumice or perlite.
- Temperature: Keep temperatures warm, ideally around 18–28 °C.
- Root zone: A free-draining pot helps protect the stem base and roots.
- Humidity: Moderate to higher humidity helps new leaves expand and aerial roots attach to support.
- Support: Add support early, while the stem is still easy to guide upward.
- Feeding: Feed lightly during active growth.
- Repotting: Repot before the plant becomes top-heavy or unstable.
Common growth issues
- Loose, stretched growth: Can follow low light, watering that swings too dry or too wet, or no climbing support.
- Yellowing lower leaves: Often comes from wet or compacted substrate.
- Brown tips or edges: Dry air, irregular watering or fertiliser buildup can cause this.
- Soft stem base: Check drainage and root health.
- Distorted new growth: Inspect young leaves for thrips or mites.
Handling and placement
Keep Anthurium balaoanum away from pets and children. Its calcium oxalate crystals can irritate the mouth and throat if plant material is ingested, and sap may irritate skin or eyes.
What the name means
The genus Anthurium refers to the flower and its tail-like spadix. The species name balaoanum refers to Balao in Ecuador.

A lovely gentle cleanser - good for rosacea-prone skin
I have also purchased the Thayer's Milky toner and really liked it.
I normally use oil-based cleansers, like Beauty of Joseon ginseng oil cleanser (which I still do love), and Cosrx makes a snail mucin cleanser that I use for cleansing off makeup or sunscreen and it's very nice. But for my daily regular wash, particularly in the morning, I like a very gentle easy-to-wash-off cleanser that hydrates and soothes.
This Thayer's has no perfumes/fragrances! Good for rosacea-prone skin. Hydrates and soothes very well.
It didn't strip my skin, wasn't oily at all (though good oil-based cleansers do feel oily they don't stay oily), and felt wonderful as I cleansed my skin - also washed away very easily and quickly; I do about 14 or so splashes of water to be sure all is removed then use a washable reusable toner pad with toner to remove any lingering residue.
It doesn't make my skin feel tight or dry. It is gentle. It doesn't lather up, which I like since I don't use lathering products or soaps on my face. No burning, itching, redness, or any irritation at all.
I normally use K-Beauty but Thayer's is one brand I will use that's not in the K-Beauty products category. It really is a lovely cleanser.

Gentle, Hydrating Cleanser That Doesn’t Strip My Skin
I’ve been really enjoying this cleanser so far. The formula feels lightweight, creamy, and hydrating without leaving behind any heavy residue. I especially love that it’s fragrance free and sulfate free because it feels very gentle on my skin and doesn’t leave my face feeling stripped, tight, or dry after washing.
The ingredients are a huge plus for me, especially the snow mushroom and hyaluronic acid. My skin feels soft, balanced, and hydrated after every use. I’ve also noticed my skin looking healthier overall since adding this into my routine.
Another feature I appreciate is the locking pump, which makes it convenient for travel or storing without worrying about leaks. Overall, this feels like a high-quality everyday cleanser and I’ll definitely continue using it.

Use it for barrier repair and our sensitive skin
This does not remove makeup the best, but my daughter and I use it for barrier repair and our sensitive skin. It helps our skin feel soft and hydrated instead of stripped or tight after washing. Great gentle cleanser for everyday use! This is now part of our monthly subscription because we use it so often.

Love,Love, LOVE This Cleanser – Dry Skin Game-Changer!
I can’t say enough good things about this cleanser. I have very dry, sensitive skin, and it’s hard to find products that cleanse effectively without stripping my skin or leaving it tight and flaky. This one is a total winner! The texture is creamy and gentle almost soothing when applied. After using it, my skin feels clean but still soft and hydrated. No irritation, no tightness, just a beautiful, healthy glow that I haven’t seen from a cleanser in ages. I’ve actually started looking forward to my skincare routine again because of how good my skin feels afterward. Another huge plus? No breakouts. Absolutely Fabulous for Any Age - Not To Be Missed
Whether you have a 15-step skincare regime or are extremely low maintenance in your skincare routine, this is a product that is an essential component to a healthy, radiant complexion. I’ll admit, my skincare game became fairly extensive as I approached 40. Prior to that, I had a solid day and night routine using 4-5 products.
After 40, my skin required more effort with a focus on hydration, prevention of damage from sun, stress, lack of sleep, etc., barrier building, and aging gracefully. At 55, people often comment on how nice my skin is and some people think I’m still in my 40s.
I owe that to a fantastic arsenal of skincare products rather than procedures (plus water, solid nutrition, and at least 8 hours of sleep per night). Nothing wrong with getting Botox or fillers, but I’m rather frugal and would rather focus on daily maintenance to ensure my skin looks as good as possible regardless of my age.
This milky toner is as good - and actually better - than brands at much higher price points. It’s thick (in a good way), provides instant hydration, and keeps my skin glowing for hours. I use it in the morning as part of my AM skincare routine, as part of my skin prep prior to doing my makeup, and every night in my PM routine.
Some people use milky toner as a setting spray (mix equal parts toner and distilled water into a spray bottle and lightly mist your face once your makeup is complete). I prefer a setting spray that provides staying power rather than additional hydration, but I have sprayed this mixture on my face if I feel dry and my skin looks parched. It feels really nice on a hot day, especially if you keep the mister cool in the fridge.
I have tried adding drops to my foundation, which is a “viral” trend, but I find this product to be a bit too thick. A thinner consistency like the Byoma Milky Toner works better for me if I want to create a more dewy foundation. I find that using this Thayers product as part of my skin prep prior to foundation along with using a dewy, hydrating foundation is better for me.
I love that this bottle is huge, affordable, easily obtained from Amazon, and incredibly effective. It’s earned its spot in my holy grail products for life.
