What is the WisMesh Booster Starter Kit (868 MHz / 915 MHz)?

It is a region-configurable, high-power-capable sub-GHz Meshtastic hardware platform designed for advanced users and community-driven mesh deployments. Powered by the RAK3401 WisBlock Core module with the Nordic nRF52840 MCU and a RAK13302 1W LoRa transceiver module, it is mounted on a RAK19007 Base Board.

The hardware supports high RF output capability (up to 1 W at the RF stage) while allowing the frequency band, transmit power, and antenna configuration to be defined by firmware and user settings.

Unlike common solutions, the RAK13302 integrates a dedicated RF filter stage, which not only enables 1W high-power transmission but also significantly enhances receiver sensitivity. This means longer range, more stable links, and stronger mesh reliability. This is ideal for outdoor adventures, emergency communications, or wide-area IoT coverage, positioning it as some of the best hardware for long-range Meshtastic networks.

Important regulatory note:
This product provides high RF output capability at the hardware level. Actual operating parameters such as frequency band, transmit power, and antenna configuration are defined by firmware settings and user configuration.

Transmit power limits, allowable frequency plans, duty cycle rules, and antenna gain restrictions vary by country and region.

It is the user's responsibility to configure this device (frequency plan, TX power, antenna, duty cycle) in compliance with local spectrum regulations.

Due to the high power consumption of the 1W transceiver, the RAK13302 cannot work from the 3.3V supply voltage. It requires:

  • Using a battery with the WisBlock Base Board
  • External 5V supply for the RAK13302 module through its own power supply connector
  • Always powering from USB

Why choose the WisMesh Booster Starter Kit (868 MHz / 915 MHz) for your Meshtastic network?

Whether upgrading a Meshtastic 1 W node or building a fresh deployment, this kit is engineered specifically for advanced users who need reliable, long‑range mesh communication in off‑grid, outdoor, or experimental setups.

The hardware supports a full 1 W RF stage (up to 30 dBm) in the sub-GHz 868 MHz (863–870 MHz) or 915 MHz (902–928 MHz), with an integrated RF front‑end including the SKY66122 amplifier + filter. Actual operating behavior (frequency band, TX power, duty cycle, antenna gain) is defined by firmware and user configuration, enabling region‑configurable use when set up correctly.

The use of the nRF52840 MCU ensures modern BLE and firmware compatibility, while the WisBlock modular ecosystem allows you to expand with sensors, displays, trackers, or repeater nodes with ease.

Compared to typical Meshtastic kits (100-160 mW output) or DIY 1W builds (which may lack RF filtering or stability), this kit delivers a proven, stable high-power solution—all while managing power, heat and regulatory concerns in a single product.

Range & RF Performance: SX1262 + SKY66122 Amplified Path

The WisMesh 1W Booster Starter Kit delivers exceptional performance for users needing a long-range Meshtastic solution. This is done by combining the Semtech SX1262 LoRa transceiver with the Skyworks SKY66122 high-power amplifier and a dedicated SAW filter. Unlike typical high-power boards that boost TX but degrade RX, this filtered RF chain, including an RF filter and PA for improved receiver sensitivity, preserves receiver performance while enabling hardware support for RF output levels up to 1 W (actual TX power depends on firmware and user configuration). The result is a cleaner signal, reduced self-interference, and significantly stronger SNR across real-world deployments. Users can expect more reliable two-way links, improved packet retention at long distances, and stable mesh coverage even in semi-obstructed environments.

Regulatory & Configuration Responsibility

This device provides high RF output capability at the hardware level within its specified frequency variant (868 MHz or 915 MHz).

Actual transmit power, frequency plan, duty cycle, and antenna configuration are defined by firmware settings and user configuration.

Users are responsible for ensuring compliance with local spectrum regulations applicable to their region.

Power Requirements & Thermal Notes

The 1W RF stage in the RAK13302 demands a stable 5V supply, as 3.3V sources cannot deliver the surge current required for high-power LoRa transmission. For reliable operation, users should power the module through USB, a regulated 5V adapter, or the WisBlock Base Board’s battery system—especially when using an SX1262 1W LoRa module in continuous or high-duty-cycle deployments.

How the 1W RF Chain Works (nRF52840 → SX1262 → PA/Filter)

The WisMesh 1W Booster Starter Kit uses a staged RF architecture to deliver clean, long-range LoRa performance. The nRF52840 MCU manages firmware and communicates with the SX1262 transceiver, which generates the sub-GHz LoRa signal, making the architecture suitable for a nRF52840 Meshtastic deployment. That signal is then boosted by the SKY66122 power amplifier, a 1W SKY66122 LoRa amplifier module, and passed through an integrated SAW filter to remove noise and harmonics. This ensures both high transmit power and excellent receiver sensitivity, enabling stable two-way communication even at long distances, as shown in the diagram below.

This ball has lasted and still have it after many months or longer. My dog loves it.
Color: Pink Squeak Toy, Size: Medium
My Belgian Malinois can really chew through inferior play toys and balls, etc., and this is one of the few that has lasted a long time, and he really likes it. Another bonus is that it gets quite slippery with his saliva and the ball will bounce a little bit unevenly, so it can either slip out of his mouth or bounce in an unexpected direction that can fool him. He has such quick reactions that is hard to get a ball past him, but with this ball, I can score extra points on him when he can't block it. Otherwise I have no chance, and he beats me every time.

Please go back to the original ball design and squeaker!!
Color: Pink Squeak Toy, Size: Medium, Color: Pink Squeak Toy, Size: Medium
Review update: I am updating my review for a few reasons. 1) The ball I ordered below was the 3rd time I purchased it. I originally bought one years ago, Pre-Covid, for my old pitty. My now Corgi, Jett loved that ball so I got a 2nd one for times when we couldn’t find the original. Well, the ball was slightly larger, the squeaker stopped working, and Jett preferred the original. 2) The newest one doesn’t squeak at all and is also slightly larger than the original. The original fell down the sewer drain that is in our backyard, and we lost the 2nd ball, so we ordered the ball again. My husband ended up having to retrieve the original from the sewer drain because Jett would pace around the sewer looking for the original. I ended up returning the 3rd ball because Jett doesn’t want anything to do with it & it doesn’t squeak. The video I provided is Jett squeaking the original that is at least 5-6 years old. I highly recommend the company go back to the original design that has not only stood the test of time and heavy use but is also the preferred size and for some reason has a much better, more reliable squeaker. I bought 2 of these balls for my Corgi mix and another for my son’s girlfriend’s Golden Retriever. Both dogs love the ball. They love the squeak and the ball is very durable. The ball doesn’t easily squeak by hand but will when they bite down on the ball or when it bounces. Speaking of, it has a decent amount of bounce to it too. Our dog loves to jump in the air to catch it after it bounces off the ground. I highly recommend this ball for medium and large dogs.

Great fun for our dogs!
Style: Original
My dogs can’t get enough of this very noisy ball. We have one outside and one in their playroom. It is very noisy. It is very hard. So, I’d say a room with fine furniture is not the place for it. Ours bang it around pretty good. Our boxer did split one, biting it. But, she’s a serious chewer! Our other dog carries it around sometimes but hasn’t been able to damage it yet. So, I’d say for most chewers it’s going to last a long time. It’s a great toy but in most households I’d say basement or outside. Again, it’s hard and did ding a few baseboards.

Superb!

My dog absolutely loves this ball. It's too big for him to fit all the way in his mouth, so it's held up pretty well and still makes the sounds.
