Euonymus americanus, commonly known as strawberry bush or hearts-a-burstin, is a charming deciduous shrub native to eastern North America. This plant gets its unique name from its distinctive bright red fruit capsules that split open to reveal bright orange seeds resembling strawberries or bursting hearts. The oval leaves provide a lush backdrop to the vibrant fruit. Inconspicuous greenish-white flowers appear in late spring, eventually giving way to the captivating fruit display in late summer to early fall. Strawberry bush thrives in woodland edges, providing habitat and food for wildlife. With its ornamental and ecological attributes, Euonymus americanus stands as a delightful addition to native gardens and natural landscapes. Zones 5-10

Germination

Euonymus americanus, commonly known as strawberry bush, requires specific conditions for successful seed germination. Begin by stratifying the seeds to break dormancy. Place the seeds in a moist medium, such as a mix of sand and peat moss, and refrigerate them for 2-3 months at around 4°C (39°F). After stratification, prepare a well-draining seed-starting mix, such as a combination of peat moss and perlite. Fill seed trays or pots with the mix and moisten it thoroughly. Sow the seeds on the surface of the soil and press them lightly into the mix without covering them, as they require light for germination. Mist the surface with water to ensure good seed-to-soil contact. Maintain a consistently moist environment by misting regularly, but avoid waterlogging. Place the seed trays or pots in a bright location with indirect sunlight, maintaining a temperature range of 20-25°C (68-77°F) for optimal germination. Germination typically occurs within a few weeks to several months. Once the seedlings develop their first true leaves, they can be carefully transplanted into larger pots or directly into the garden. Ensure the garden soil is well-draining and the plants receive partial to full sunlight.

Highly recommended read!!
Format: Hardcover
My book club read this. It’s a thoughtful and emotional story with believable characters and strong family themes. I especially loved the message of forgiveness, which added real depth to the story. I’m from the area where the book takes place and found the setting and details extremely accurate. I could picture myself in and around it. Loved it and highly recommend. Looking forward to this author’s next book!

Excellent Read. Highly recommend.

I can't believe how much I loved this book. It was so well written, and it kept me interested to the very last page. I couldn't put it down. If you're looking for a coming-of-age book with a lot of twists and turns and some feminism thrown in this book is for you it gave me a lot to think about. Way to go Deborah Curtis on your first novel. I hope you'll be publishing more.

not too shabby
Format: Kindle
This book reminds me of a Jane Austin novel. She writes like Jane Austin. The author did a good job with realism, life is painful and there was a plethora of that in this book. I do like how it ended even though I’m not a huge fan of Lilys choices. I’m not sure she deserved her ending, she reconciled one tragedy in her life but several others are still waiting for her to take responsibility for. It was worth the read.
